If you're going to break the speed limit -- which, for the record, we can't condone -- it's probably not a good idea to take a video of yourself in the process. Yet the driver of a C8-generation Chevy Corvette in Tempe, Arizona, recently recorded himself driving at more than 140 mph, according to the Tempe Police Department. The next day, police say they encountered him and he tried to make a run for it, but the cops were prepared; they captured the mid-engine sports car with a grappler, the driver was arrested, and the Corvette impounded.

According to police, the incident began when the suspect recorded himself exceeding 140 miles per hour while crossing the Mill Avenue Bridge in Tempe. This same car had been reported to police several times for reckless driving and loud noises, according to authorities. A video posted by the police that appears to be from the Corvette's on-board Performance Data Recorder camera shows what seems to be a bike-mounted officer attempted to stop the speeding Corvette when it stopped for a light in town; however, as the video shows, the driver took off, blowing through several red lights.

The very next day, the Corvette driver was reportedly spotted speeding once again. This time, the cops had more than a bicycle at their disposal: a patrol car armed with a grappler device was able to successfully deploy the car-catching device and bring the Corvette to a stop.

Although seemingly caught red-handed, the Corvette driver was apparently not ready to concede to the police. After being placed in handcuffs, police bodycam footage records officer asking him, "Why would you slow down and then rapidly accelerate from the police?" The suspect responds, "Are you sure that was me?"

Fleeing from a marked police car in Arizona is a class 5 felony. If convicted the driver faces a prison sentence of up to 1.5 years and a fine up to $150,000. On top of that, the grappler likely did some damage to the now-impounded Corvette.

We would be remiss if we didn't point out that, just an hour south of the Mill Avenue Bridge where the driver recorded himself speeding, is the Podium Club at Attesa racing facility. We'd say the driver would have been much better off registering for a high-performance driver education event at his local track instead of running from the police.
