NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A car crashed through a woman's bedroom on Smith Springs Road early Sunday morning, leaving neighbors shaken and demanding increased police presence in the area.

The homeowner escaped injury after leaving her bedroom with her two dogs just minutes before the 8 a.m. crash. The vehicle ran off Smith Springs Road, hit an embankment, and landed in the roof of her home, crushing the dogs' crates in the process.

Steven Burris, who has lived in the area for 25 years, said the crash didn't surprise him.

"Here's a car that took a nosedive. Had to have been going, I would say, 100 plus, coming up the road," Burris said.

Burris said crashes are so frequent in the area that he has replaced his mailbox at least three times due to vehicle accidents.

"Why don't the police kind of start pulling some of these people over some of the stupid stuff that they're doing?" Burris said.

District 29 Council Member Tasha Ellis stated that officials are working to address the speeding issue. While a new southeast police precinct is opening in the next few weeks, Ellis wants to see officers deployed immediately.

"I want to go ahead and see if we can't get these, those officers, supposed to be over 80 officers that are going to be staffed at that new precinct, if we can't go ahead and get them out on the street because it is, you know, a dire situation here when it comes to speeding," Ellis said.

Metro Nashville Police said the driver, Evelyn Sis, was hospitalized with a broken neck and faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence, drinking under the age of 21, driving without a license and reckless endangerment. MNPD says the misdemeanor citation was issued in lieu of a physical arrest because of the amount of time Sis will remain in the hospital.

A passenger in the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

The homeowner said she hopes the incident will draw attention to the need for additional safety measures on Smith Springs Road.
