Toyota probably isn't the first brand that comes to mind when you think of fun cars. But while the brand certainly sells more than its fair share of mundane machinery, the occasional hot Toyota is nothing to sneeze at -- and the brand has made clear that it has one mean beast of a speed machine coming.

Fans have been desperate for more information about the highly anticipated sports car rumored to be named Lexus LFR, which will arrive to fill the halo car-shaped hole at the top of the lineup, desperation that's only heightened with every camouflaged version to appear at the Nurburgring or the Goodwood Festival of Speed. And based on some recent posts by Toyota ahead of the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, we might not have that much longer to wait.

In the lead-up to the automaker's presentation at the mobility show at the end of the month, Toyota has posted some rather unique teaser images for the upcoming sports car. More specifically, the brand unveiled a new billboard at the iconic Fuji Speedway, which highlights three of the brand's less-than-mundane offerings. The first is an image of a lovely 2000GT from the 1960s, which proved that Toyota could build a genuine rival to the sports car providers. The advertisement also features the Lexus LFA, which remains perhaps the brand's most sought after and desirable model with its Yamaha-built V-10.

But it's the final image that's most compelling, as it features the front of a new sports car wearing current Toyota GR badging. This seemingly confirms that Toyota will have its own variant of the so-called LFR; whether or not that will be sold alongside a Lexus version or in place of it remains to be seen, but given that we were first introduced to the LFR's shape by way of the Toyota GR GT3 Concept at the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, that isn't much of a surprise. If the car does wear Lexus badging, however, that variant could potentially resemble the mysterious concept car the brand showed off at Monterey Car Week this year (below).

We still don't have specific details about the upcoming sports car, but we do know it's expected to arrive with a hybridized V-8 powertrain. Performance should be well beyond the capabilities of the GR Supra, the current (and outgoing) top dog of the lineup. Toyota executives also previously suggested that we could see the GR GT3 car on the race track in early 2026, as the RC F GT3 will no longer comply with series regs after 2025. Even if the car doesn't get a proper highlight during Japan Mobility Week, we expect the debut to come before much longer. It can't happen soon enough as far as we're concerned.
