The Airport Authority of India (AAI) plans to construct a new integrated terminal building for Coimbatore International Airport, which will be four times bigger than the existing one, said the airport Director G. Sambath Kumar on Tuesday (September 16, 2025).

The proposed new terminal building will be spread across 75,000 sq.m as against the current facility of 18,000 sq.m., he said.

With a capacity to handle 4,200 peak hour passengers, the new terminal will have a new apron for 14 aircraft bays, parallel taxi track and link taxiway. Scope of works, design and drawings of the terminal building were being finalised, along with cost estimation.

Land handed over

According to Mr. Kumar, the Tamil Nadu government has handed over 605 acres of land out of the 627 acres requested by AAI for the airport expansion project. He said that a joint survey by AAI and State authorities of the data pertaining to the land handed over to AAI was currently underway.

He said that validation of the land was essential for the finalisation of the design. Construction of a compound wall for the land already handed over to AAI is expected to be completed by September 26. The total length of the wall would be about 16 km.

After the completion of the joint survey and construction of the compound wall, the final design is expected to be completed within five months.

He added that the Coimbatore Corporation has proposed a sewage treatment plant to deal with the wastewater flowing through a drain that enters the airport compound from the north side.

Mr. Kumar added that AAI will celebrate 'Yatri Sewa Diwas' with various activities at the airport on Wednesday, September 17.
