London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has enjoyed a £5,000 pay rise and now earns more than the Prime Minister, it was revealed today.

Following his pay bump, Sir Sadiq is on a salary of £170,282 for his role overseeing the capital.

This is almost £1,000 higher than the £169,344 that Sir Keir Starmer earns for being PM.

Sir Keir is given a salary of £93,904 for being an MP, while he also accepts £75,440 as a ministerial salary.

Like other recent PMs, Sir Keir does not claim his full ministerial allowance of £80,807.

It is thought Sir Sadiq, who is serving an historic third term at City Hall, is now the highest-paid politician in the UK apart from the House of Commons Speaker.

John Swinney, Scotland's First Minister, recently declined a pay rise to keep his salary at £135,605.

Wales' First Minister Eluned Morgan earns £157,624, while Andy Burnham, the Labour mayor of Greater Manchester, earns £118,267.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Commons Speaker, earns around £175,000.

The Labour politician, who is in charge of Transport for London, once promised there would be 'zero strikes' on public transport if he was elected mayor.

He has also faced scrutiny over crime rates in London during his mayoralty, as well as his record on housebuilding in the capital.

Susan Hall, the defeated Tory candidate in last year's mayoral election, told the Mail of Sir Sadiq's pay: 'If he was on performance-related pay he would owe Londoners a fortune!'

City Hall confirmed Sir Sadiq had been given a 3.2 per cent salary boost following an 'independent review' last year.

The Evening Standard first revealed his pay rise after it was quietly published on the Greater London Authority website as part of Sir Sadiq's official biography.

A spokesperson for Sir Sadiq said: 'Following an independent review last year, the Greater London Authority has a uniform process in place to determine annual salary increases for the mayor and London Assembly members for the duration of this term.

'This ensures that any potential pay increases are determined in an impartial, fair and simple way, linked to the local government pay settlement.

'This is independent of the mayor and the GLA and in line with long-standing practice.

'Following the conclusion of this year's agreement, the mayor and Assembly Members have received the local government 3.2 per cent salary increase.'
