FLIGHT delays and cancellations are piling up across the tri-state area as a powerful nor'easter lashes the region with heavy rain, flooding, and fierce winds.

The storm is hammering New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, causing chaos for travelers trying to get in and out of major airports.

At Newark Liberty, John F. Kennedy, and LaGuardia airports, airlines from Delta and United to JetBlue and American are scrambling to adjust schedules as conditions worsen.

The Federal Aviation Administration has ordered multiple ground stops and issued delay programs as the system pushes through.

Departures to LaGuardia were grounded early Monday due to high winds, with delays averaging around 15 minutes and expected to grow.

The FAA warned that the probability of extending those groundings remains "medium," meaning travelers should brace for longer waits.

Newark and JFK could also face ground stops later in the day, with forecasts showing winds gusting up to 60 mph and up to five inches of rain expected.

Officials said the nor'easter is bringing both coastal flooding and inland flash flooding, with some areas already seeing roads underwater.

Boston's Logan International Airport is also feeling the brunt of the storm, with 60 flights canceled and 25 delayed as of early Monday, according to FlightAware.

"I just walked up to the counter to get my ticket and they said it was canceled," a traveler told NBC affiliate WBTS.

Another passenger said their flight to Jacksonville was delayed by an hour, pushing their arrival close to midnight.

"I'm going to Pittsburgh to see my mom and my flight is delayed by an hour and a half," a traveler added.

"My parents are picking me up at midnight, which they're not happy about."

Across southern New England, TF Green Airport in Rhode Island reported four delays Monday morning.

Bradley International in Connecticut fared better, with only two delays reported.

Beyond the skies, transportation across the region has also been disrupted by the fierce conditions.

The MBTA canceled all Lynn, Quincy, and Winthrop ferry services, while the Steamship Authority suspended trips between Hyannis and Nantucket.

Many residents in New England were also left without power as strong winds took down trees and power lines.

FAA advisories showed widespread impacts extending beyond the Northeast, with airports in San Diego, Denver, and Phoenix also expected to experience disruptions due to maintenance and runway closures.

Programs were "probable" at major hubs including Boston, LaGuardia, Newark, and Philadelphia through Monday night, according to an FAA operations plan.

The advisory also cited "low ceilings, high winds, and thunderstorms" throughout the day, reducing arrival rates and complicating air traffic across the East Coast.

Ground stops were expected to intensify after 5 pm at both JFK and Newark as the nor'easter continues to churn through the region.

Travelers were urged to check their flight status directly with airlines before heading to the airport, as cancellations and delays are expected to rise through the evening.

With storm conditions expected to persist into Tuesday, officials warned that flight schedules may not return to normal until the weather clears and operations stabilize.
