Parts of Pilbara and Kimberley surpassed 40 degrees Celsius yesterday but meteorologists say the temperatures will not trigger a heatwave warning yet.

Australia was home to the hottest place in the world this week as the country's "heat engine" cranked up ahead of summer. On Monday, the remote Pilbara station Mardie reached 43.5 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest spot on the planet for the day, according to online world temperatures site El Dorado Weather , which collates temperature data from thousands of stations around the world.

It was followed by Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley, and the Pilbara towns of Onslow, Marble Bar and Telfer.But despite temperatures climbing up to 10C higher than normal for some places, it is not considered a heatwave yet -- showing it takes more than a hot day to trigger a warning. According to Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury, it is not unusual to see Australia rank among the hottest places in the world at this time of year.Though many of this week's temperatures in the Pilbara have pipped other places like Argentina and Algeria, which also rank among the warmest in the world this time of year. "This time of year, we start to hit 40 degrees pretty consistently through parts of northern Australia, the north-west Australia in particular," Ms Bradbury said. "At the same time, those hot parts of the northern hemisphere ... like the interior of the US and North Africa ... drop below 40 degrees."Onslow, on Western Australia's Pilbara coast, reached a top of 43C on Monday at its airport -- 10C above its average, while Exmouth airport reached 41C.The 'silent killer' heatwave A relentless heatwave gripping Australia's south-east in January 2009 became Australia's worst natural disaster in recent history. Marble Bar touts itself as being Australia's hottest town, after recording 160 days straight of temperatures over 37.7C."I think all of our Pilbara communities would be well used to the heat building at this time of year and would say, 'we've had hotter weather than this', and they're right," Ms Bradbury. For somewhere like Marble Bar, for example, temperatures would have to be in the order of 45C during the day and 30C at night for at least three days for a severe heatwave to be issued.ABC News: Cason HoMs Bradbury said it was a reminder that when heatwave warnings were issued, they should be taken seriously. "Unfortunately, some people do tend to dismiss them mentally a little bit. They think, 'it's summer, it's always hot,'" she said. Heatwaves kill far more people than other natural disasters. ABC Emergency has a checklist of things you can do to be ready.The heatwave warning also considers the temperature over the past 30 days to account for the body's ability to adapt to heat.Australia's 'heat engine' The weather in the Pilbara can seem pretty remote for most Australians, but it can play an important role in some of the extreme conditions seen in southern parts of the country. The region is sometimes referred to as the "heat engine" because the warm air that builds up there is, at times, transported across the country by troughs and fronts."We definitely do see heat in northern Australia being transferred into southern parts of Australia," Ms Bradbury said.This time of year is still considered to be early in the heatwave season, with any warm weather in the south tending to be short-lived, according to Ms Bradbury. As summer progresses, heatwave warnings will become more frequent in the forecast for southern Australia. "In both of southern WA and the south-east states, it's typically later in the season, from January, February, March kind of period, that we would start to see the heatwaves," Ms Bradbury said.
