It's been a soggy start to the week as that closed low-pressure system that brought last night's steady rain and mountain snow is now spinning just off the Oregon-California border. As it drops farther south tonight, any lingering light rain or snow showers in the mountains will taper off, leaving most of us under drier skies.

Now, as that system slides inland through central California and the Great Basin tomorrow and Wednesday, there's a slight chance -- about 10 to 25% -- that some wrap-around moisture could brush the Blues with a few light showers. Otherwise, expect mostly dry conditions across the rest of the area.

The bigger story tonight will be the cold. Freeze Warnings are in effect for the Foothills of the Blue Mountains, the Simcoe Highlands, and the Kittitas Valley. Some of those valleys could easily dip below freezing by sunrise Tuesday. For the Columbia Basin, it's not quite as certain -- temperatures might flirt with the freezing mark, especially where skies clear out just before dawn.

Tomorrow night could actually be a better setup for widespread frost and freeze potential with calmer winds and clearer skies allowing for strong radiational cooling. Either way, gardeners and growers should plan for several chilly mornings in a row through midweek.

After that, things start to improve. A ridge of high pressure builds in mid- to late week, bringing mostly sunny skies and a gradual warm-up through Saturday. But don't put the jackets too far away just yet -- our next weather maker could arrive by late Saturday into Sunday. Ensembles show another Pacific system on the move, and while models differ a bit on how strong it'll be, we could see another round of showers and breezy winds, especially in the mountains and wind-prone areas of the Columbia Plateau.

And for those breezy days later in the week -- especially Sunday -- gusts could approach 40 to 45 mph in spots, though confidence in stronger advisory-level winds is still on the lower side for now.

Bottom line: a chilly couple of mornings ahead, a nice warm-up later this week, and a possible return to wet and windy weather by the weekend.
