With an unseasonably warm October so far the prospect for snow seems a distant thought. Several forecasting sights have predicted a drop in temperatures at the end of the month with some even forecasting snow for parts of the UK.

The Met Office is tipping a drop in temperatures but predictions of snow bombs and Arctic blasts seem somewhat off the mark.

WXCharts' latest maps suggest that parts of the UK could see around seven centimetres of snow before October ends. However, there's a significant divide amongst meteorologists, with the Met Office maintaining that the warm pattern will persist for a while longer.

The extended Met Office forecast states: "High pressure is expected to prevail, leading to plenty of dry, settled weather. Temperatures will most likely be near average or in places pleasantly warm by day, at least at first, but with some chilly nights and chance of isolated frost where skies remain clear."

It covers the period from Sunday 12 October to Tuesday 21 October, after which the weather is expected to become more variable.

Looking forward, NetWeather meteorologist Nick Finnis predicted: "Later in the week, high pressure will start to build more widely from the southwest, with more widespread drier and settled conditions across the UK."

However, the Met Office has cautioned that cooler conditions are set to arrive towards the month's end, although they haven't detailed the severity of the temperature decline.

Snow is particularly difficult to forecast with any certainty days ahead and can change within a couple of hours and a few miles, depending on a wide range of factors.

Today (Monday) the national weather forecasting agency's extended outlook for the UK from Friday October 17 to Sunday October 26 says: "High pressure is expected to dominate the UK weather at the start of this period. Whilst a little rain and drizzle is likely in parts of the southeast and north, mainly over the higher ground, much of the UK will be predominantly dry.

"Cloud amounts will be variable but often large, although there will be some spells of sunshine. There are likely to be some fog patches overnight, slowly clearing through the morning.

"Temperatures are likely to be close to normal for the time of year overall. During the second half of this period, there are signs that the general pattern will shift with low pressure systems probably moving in from the west in some fashion. However, details of any more unsettled weather are still very uncertain."

And looking further into the future, which has lower confidence, the Met Office forecast for between Monday October 27 to Monday November 10 is: "This period is likely to see changeable conditions across the UK with low pressure systems tending to dominate.

"Showers or longer spells of rain are likely at times, perhaps heavy in places, with some strong winds also possible at times. However, there will also likely be some temporary drier interludes at times.

"Temperatures will probably be close to normal overall."
