South-eastern Australia will be riding a rollercoaster of unstable weather this week, with top temperatures across capital cities varying by up to 15 degrees. The wild fluctuations forecast in the coming days are being caused by a collision between warm air from Australia's interior colliding with cold fronts sweeping across the southern mainland, reports Weatherzone.

For multiple states, it will bring a cocktail of average maximum temperatures and typical spring weather.The forecast maximum temperatures at 6pm on Thursday, October 16, 2025, for mainland south-eastern Australia. Sydney, which was basking in a top of 32 degrees on Sunday is headed for more of the same on Friday, before the mercury tumbles on Saturday to a maximum of 21 degrees.The following day will feel much colder though, with the maximum temperature forecast to reach only 18 degrees. Adelaide is in for sunny conditions this week, with the mercury reaching a top of 27 degrees over the next two days. But by Sunday in the City of Churches, it will climb to 32 degrees. Residents in Hobart have only a short window to bask in warm conditions. The temperature is on track to peak at 27 degrees by Thursday before slumping to a high of only 16 degrees on Friday. The remaining capital cities can expect midweek maximum temperatures in the mid twenties, except for Darwin which is forecast for a sultry 35 degrees. Weather forecasters say we shouldn't be surprised by the fluctuations: a run of steady top temperatures is just as common as days of see-sawing maximums.
