Episode reveals parents who killed daughters, fled for years, faced public outrage

The 54th episode of tcast E Channel's 'Brave Detectives 4' (directed by Lee Ji-sun), broadcast on the 17th of last month, featured Kim Joong-wi, Police Lieutenant and head of the 1st Strong Crime Team at Pocheon Police Station, former Senior Superintendent Yoon Woo-cheol of the Scientific Crime Investigation Unit (KCSI), and Superintendent Kim Jin-soo, who shared their investigation logs.

The first case introduced began with a report stating, "A car has fallen off a cliff." No one was in the driver's seat, and a blue raincoat covering a skeletal remains was found crouched next to the vehicle. The body was small enough to appear underage, and another set of skeletal remains was discovered in a blanket nearby, adding to the shock.

The car's owner, a man in his 40s, had gone missing with his entire family 10 months before the incident. His brother-in-law had filed a missing persons report after receiving a letter stating, "We are leaving with the children." The investigation revealed that the husband had faced business failure, while his wife owed 100 million Korean won, including fines for manipulating sales records in her educational materials sales job. DNA testing confirmed the skeletal remains were the couple's two daughters.

A mat found under the vehicle contained a letter from the couple stating, "We tried to freeze to death but failed, so we will jump into a lake," but no bodies were found in the nearby lake. The couple later received frostbite treatment at a university hospital and wandered the country. After one year, they were publicly wanted, with the husband designated as the number one fugitive. Arrested in Busan after evading capture for 2 years and 2 months, they confessed to killing their daughters but gave inconsistent statements, claiming they turned on the heater and fell asleep to die, or that they survived a cliff fall while the children did not -- statements that outraged the public. Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison, further infuriating the public.

The KCSI then presented a case that began with a report of a man collapsed in a hallway of a row house, bleeding, and a child crying for their father. The child, 9 years old at the time, had witnessed the attack, adding to the tragedy. The victim, a man in his 40s who ran a gift card exchange shop, was stabbed by a thief targeting his bag while returning home with his child ahead of Lunar New Year.

The child testified that a man humming a tune took the father's bag and stabbed him. The investigation team completed a composite sketch through hypnosis and proceeded with the image of a masked suspect. Local merchants and residents pointed to a man in his 30s with nine prior convictions who lived in the same neighborhood. Notably, he had worn a mask in previous crimes and recently bought shoes at a store, leaving his old pair behind. Bloodstains from the victim were found on the toe of the discarded shoes.

The suspect, arrested at an arcade, initially denied the crime and confessed only to two thefts. After bloodstain analysis, he gave a ridiculous reason: "I drank and wanted to have fun." He claimed he waited near the victim's home after seeing him put money and gift cards in his bag but insisted he did not see the child. However, during the trial, he contradicted himself, saying he was startled by the child and stabbed the victim by accident. He was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment.
