Period drama enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the premiere of Channel 5's brand new series, The Forstyes, on Monday, October 20. This fresh take on John Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga novels delves into the lives, loves, trials and triumphs of a wealthy late Victorian stockbroking family.

The star-studded cast includes Poldark's Eleanor Tomlinson, Susan Hampshire, who first appeared in The Forsyte Saga in 1967, Coronation Street's Millie Gibson, and Home and Away's Joshua Orpin. Also joining the line-up are Downton Abbey's Tuppence Middleton, True Blood actor Stephen Moyer, and Jack Davenport.

Described as a "lavish" period drama with "outstanding attention to detail, craftmanship and finishing across all departments including production design, costume, hair and makeup."

Many Channel 5 viewers will be curious about where the sets were constructed and where filming took place.

The majority of the filming for The Forsytes was carried out at The Bottle Yard Studios and on location in Bristol with the support of the Film Office last year, reports the Express.

Set interiors were created at The Bottle Yard Studios for rooms in Jolyon Forsyte's Richmond Park house Robin Hill, Soames Forsyte's Knightsbridge house on Montpelier Square, the solicitors offices of Forsyte & Co, the cottage home of Louisa Byrne, the Soho dressmaker who is Jolyon Jr Forsyte's first love, and architect Philip Bosinney's office.

However, many other scenes will be instantly recognisable to those familiar with Bristol. The Christmas Steps underwent a transformation to mimic the Parisian setting of 1880's Montmartre, while St. Mary Redcliffe Church was a key filming location.

All Saints Lane, Denmark Street, Hobbs Lane, Orchard Lane, Frog Lane and Frogmore Street in the city centre were transformed into bustling Soho street scenes complete with horse and carriages, carts, market stall dressings and even washing lines strung across the streets, whilst Tailor's Court was the backdrop for cafe scenes.

Goldney House at the University of Bristol saw its Mahogany Parlour used as the setting for a Gentleman's Club.

Clifton also features heavily, with Dowry Square in Hotwells becoming a key setting, along with Blaise Castle Estate, and Ashton Court Estate which were used for walking and talking scenes.

Arnos Vale Cemetery was another significant filming location. The grade II* listed Anglican Chapel that stands on the 45-acre Victorian heritage site was transformed into a boxing ring.

When you watch the final scenes, you'll spot our tall, elegant windows in the background. The Forsytes is set to air on Channel 5 on Monday, October 20 at 9pm. The series synopsis reveals: "Family stability is threatened by two chance encounters for rival cousins, Jolyon and Soames, throwing their previously steady lives into disarray.

"Married Jolyon contends with the reappearance of his former lover, Louisa, a lady's maid-turned-dressmaker, while daughter June falls for a penniless architect. Soames, meanwhile, is enchanted by the beautiful and free-spirited dancer Irene. All must decide whether to be ruled by the head or the heart."
