The first season of this amiable Los Angeles-based romcom was a big hit for Netflix. Understandably, many appeared to enjoy watching gorgeous people as they sauntered around a sun-kissed city, with not much to worry about except whether all the other gorgeous people might be attracted to them and where the next matcha latte could be found. But it had an undercurrent of something more knotty: rabbi Noah (Adam Brody) falls for sex-and-relationships podcaster Joanne (Kristen Bell), forcing them both to ruminate on the role of faith in modern love, and whether Joanne's lack of it would prove a deal-breaker. It was moreish, pretty and easy to consume. (Some were less taken with its stereotyping, particularly of Jewish women.)

It returns for a second run facing the standard problem of all long-running romcoms. The will-they, won't-they culminated in Noah and Joanne deciding to get serious, which means that a decent portion of its in-built tension has dissipated. It has to find it elsewhere, so it moves them out of the honeymoon phase, and into more practical concerns, such as how the rabbi, his community and his observant family will handle the reality of him dating a woman who is not Jewish. They assume that Joanne will eventually convert, but she begins to bristle under the pressure. Can the couple handle the friction of their two distinct worlds?

If it sounds familiar, it is. This is mostly more of the same, though it does at least try to avoid repeating itself, turning to the milestones of any early love affair. The couple host their first joint dinner party in an attempt to blend their friends and siblings. Their parents meet for the first time, which leads to one of the funniest exchanges of the season, as Noah's mother Bina (Tovah Feldshuh) tries hard to craft a compliment about Joanne.

It brings in more drama for the supporting characters. Joanne's sister and podcast co-host Morgan (Justine Lupe) is frustrated by her sister's self-involvement, and eventually starts her own potentially issue-strewn relationship with therapist Dr Andy (Succession's Arian Moayed). At the other end of the romantic timescale, Noah's brother Sasha (Timothy Simons) and wife Esther (Jackie Tohn), who is masterful at the art of a withering put-down, have to address what it means to stoke the fires of a long-term marriage.

Giving Tohn more to do is one of this season's smartest moves, as is the injection of fresh faces. Brody's real-life wife Leighton Meester appears as a childhood friend of Joanne and Morgan's, who comes back into their lives as a successful mommy influencer. Best of all, it brings in Seth Rogen and Kate Berlant as a married couple from a progressive temple who enter Noah's sphere. Rogen is currently enjoying a TV renaissance, starring in two of the year's best comedies, Platonic and The Studio, and he is a welcome presence here.

Nobody Wants This is not on a par with either of those series, particularly Platonic, with which it shares some of its wealthy Californian DNA. Like Joanne, it has always hovered between charming and obnoxious, and this season it veers more towards the latter. It still has appeal, but it is starting to sit much more close to the surface.
