Going out for dinner can be an exciting way to wrap up the week. Whether you're just out for a casual Friday night dinner or hitting up Gordon Ramsay's roast dinner on a Sunday, it's exciting to have someone cook your food.

But while dinner plans can be fun (especially with the right company), it's quite common for people to forget all they know about etiquette when out in public. In fact, you could well be making one standard mistake every time you ask the host for your bill at the end of your meal, so have you committed this restaurant sin?

Etiquette expert and author William Hanson, from Bristol, recently divulged the blunder many people might be making which is considered rude.

In a TikTok video with his three million followers, he wrote in a caption: "Shouting out to a waiter is almost as rude as clicking at them!"

William, who is the owner of The English Manner, an etiquette and protocol coaching company, explained how to get the attention of waiting staff.

He said: "Well, first of all don't put your hand in the air, you're not at school.

"Definitely no clicking and there's no need to say 'excuse me!'"

Instead of trying to grab their attention in an obvious way, William added: "It's all done with eye contact and body language."

Since he shared the advice, his video quickly garnered 46,800 likes and 1,200 comments when it was posted this month.

One joked: "I just whistle," while another added: "I just shout oi." Meanwhile a third asked: "What if they avoid eye contact?"

Other TikTok followers claimed William did raise his hand while demonstrating the 'correct' way to grab a waiter's attention.

William is a British etiquette coach and twice Sunday Times bestselling author. He is also the host of podcasts, Help I Sexted My Boss and The Luxury Podcast.

He joined The English Manner, an etiquette and protocol coaching company, in 2008, before becoming the owner in 2019.

Previously he revealed you've been eating bananas wrong. According to a previous Instagram video of his, you should never peel the fruit.

Instead you're supposed to use a knife and fork as he carefully demonstrated the method in a clip which sparked quite a discussion at the time from viewers who claimed it's just causing extra dishes.

One said: "Bruh, you offended the entire world's population." While another added: "Need to know how this dude eats a sandwich."
