The best fish and chips shops have been announced - and the good news is they're spread all over the UK - so there's probably a fantastic chippy near you.

Fish and chips have been a beloved British food dish since the 19th century when it became a quick, cheap meal for working class Brits to celebrate the end of the working week.

When the rise of railways made seaside resorts more accessible, it also became a top treat for day-trippers heading to the coast, who instead of packing a picnic, would perfect their day at the seaside with fish and chips.

Fast forward to today and it's still a part of British tradition - so much so that every year takeaways all over the country vie for the title of the UK's best fish and chip shop.

The 2025 best chippy list has been announced and includes contenders from coastal hotspots, rural areas, and major cities and - although I'd love to visit them all - I have been to one which won a couple of years ago and has been shortlisted again!

The list will be whittled down to 20, then 10, before the winners are finally announced at a ceremony in London in February 2026. Awards will be handed out in 14 categories, including best newcomer and outstanding contribution to the industry.

I was once lucky enough to go to Knights Fish Restaurant in Glastonbury, which was named Restaurant of the Year at the National Fish and Chip Shop Awards 2024, and has made the list again!

I remember as I walked towards the quant mediaeval building, my stomach began to rumble as the unmissable smell of a chippy wafted down the street. It's a scent that's been tempting locals, tourists and some big celebrities through the door for the last 115 years.

And while there's nothing wrong with ordering a takeaway to tuck into while watching the telly, you can also sit inside. I chose a spot by the log burner and ordered myself a very generous serving of haddock, chips and mushy peas. Did they deserve to win the top spot? It was a 'yes' from me as the batter was succulent, not at all greasy and the chips were light and fluffy too.

When fish and chips are this good, you're bound to boast a few famous followers especially when you're just a stone's throw away from one of the most popular music festivals in the world. Over the years staff have served Nicholas Cage, members of the Lightning Seeds and Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis, so it's a great place for celeb spotting too.
