A Susquehanna Valley landmark is celebrating its 100th birthday. The Yorktowne Hotel opened its doors back in 1925.The Yorktowne Hotel joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Since 1925, it has seen guests from celebrities like Frank Sinatra, to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Pieces of a century's worth of memories can be seen throughout the building."The Cutler mailbox was installed in 1925," said James Parker, from the Yorktowne Hotel. "It's a 100-year-old mailbox. We've got chandeliers galore in this hotel. We've got the 1925 one just in the corner over there. Then, we've got the three in the ballroom as well, which date from the 1940s."In 2016, the hotel underwent extensive renovations. Reopening its doors in January 2023, the 14-story building is ingrained in the history of York."With all the history of York, that just adds to some of these local Yorktown stories that we hear of people that have memories over decades and years here at the hotel," Parker said. On Oct. 17, the hotel will be transformed into a speakeasy, as a nod to when the hotel first started welcoming guests. The event is free for the public to attend, and runs from 5 to 9 p.m.
