Our cheeky 60p Tesco iceberg outlasted Liz Truss' time as PM and now the video of it - which made headlines around the world - is being immortalised in the British Film Institute's National Archive.

Turnip for the books : In the 18 century British politician Charles 'Turnip' Townshend got the moniker for promoting the veg as part of the crop rotation system that helped boost the Agricultural Revolution.

Spin-actually! Spinach famously made cartoon character Popeye stronger. But this was based on an overestimate about the amount of iron in the green stuff made by German boffin Erich von Wolf, who got his decimal point in the wrong place.

Peas of work : Austrian monk Gregor Mendel established the science of genetics in the 19 century by studying peas. The first colour advert on British TV, in 1969, was for Birds Eye frozen peas.

Partial to parsnips : The Roman emperor Tiberius was so fond of parsnips that he accepted them in tribute from the Germanic tribes.
