John Terry has said his "dream" is to manage Chelsea and that he finds it "difficult to fathom" that he has been knocked back from head coach roles due to inexperience.

The former England captain made 717 appearances for the London club during his career, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League before leaving for Aston Villa in 2017, where he retired after a year.

The 44-year-old then spent three seasons as assistant manager of Villa, under Dean Smith, before taking up minor coaching roles at Leicester City and Chelsea, where he works part-time.

"For me the one thing that's missing is being manager (of Chelsea)," he said in a social media video on Tuesday. "It's my one last dream, I've done everything at Chelsea."

Terry said he could "not fathom" that people have rejected him for head coach roles by telling him he has "got no experience", saying he "went away and learnt my trade" before "leaving Villa to be number one".

"I think I would be a really good number one," he said, speaking in his car. "As a player you retire after 22 years playing and 100 per cent you learn enough to go into management.

"I'd like to lead like I did (in) the dressing room and the team. It's what I've done for 22 years, I know I'd be good at it. Will I get the chance? I'm not sure, without doing all the other bits."

After leaving Villa, Terry expresssed an interest in joining Bournemouth and Bristol City but both clubs decided that there were more favourable candidates. He also missed out on being interviewed for the Derby County manager's job in 2021, owing to his inexperience.

Many of Terry's former teammates have taken up head coach roles since their retirement. Former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard is managing Coventry City who are top of the Championship after five straight wins. Former England teammates Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard have also taken number one positions, with the latter turning down the chance to return to manage Rangers for a second time this month.

Terry made 78 appearances for England. He was charged by the Football Association in 2012 for using racist language, after being accused by Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand a "f*g black c**t" during a Premier League game in 2011.

In 2021, he addressed the issue in an interview with The Times, saying "racism is unacceptable", having denied the charges at the time.
