A couple of young vandals were turned in to the authorities by their own mothers after they decided to trash their school library, causing more than £37,000 ($50,000) in damages.

The two boys have been identified by officials as 12-year-old Felix Cohen Romero and 13-year-old Bentley Ryan Wehrly. They are said to have confessed to vandalising the Friendship Elementary library in Deltona, according to a Facebook post from the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

Officers discovered the damage when they responded to a fire alarm at 1am, arriving with their guns drawn as they made their way through the mess, which was strewn through several rooms in the small school library.

The two boys had smashed a glass door, vandalised the media centre, and broken up furniture, before throwing books around and spraying graffiti on doors, according to the New York Post.

They were shown on video surveillance right before breaking into the library, with one boy sporting a Monster Energy drink hat and both wearing face masks, according to images released by the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

The boys then returned to admire their alleged handiwork, and proceeded to do some more damage, late on Sunday night, setting off the fire alarm in the process.

The sheriff's office shared the photos of the two boys, requesting the public to share any information that could lead to their identification and capture.

After receiving several tips, the sheriff's office said the boys were turned in by their own mothers.

"Their moms turned them in," the sheriff's office said in an update."After the video was posted, we received lots of emails identifying them (thank you all!), as well as contacts from each of the defendants' mothers," the update continued.

Each boy has been charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school grounds, criminal mischief and theft.

Following the news, people have spoken out in praise of the boys' mums. "I'm sure that was incredibly hard, but it was the right thing to do. Helping them learn about consequences is the hardest part of being a parent," one person commented online.

"Way to go moms, commend you for doing the right thing!" a second said. And a third added: "They should have to go clean it up during school hours so everyone can see."

It comes after mindless yobs caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to 41 cars after going on a wrecking spree in a town over the summer. The vandals went on the rampage in a quiet residential neighbourhood in the Overslade area of Rugby, Warwickshire.

Devastated homeowners awoke on the morning of Sunday, August 3, to find their vehicle windows smashed in and spray painted with green paint. The cruel crooks targeted the cars between 12am and 2am along Saunton Road, Westbourne Grove and Wentworth Road.
