The inspectors said the council's "strength of ambition for children remains as focused as ever".

They recently visited the services and outlined their findings in a letter. This recognised the council's ambition to become a "child-friendly" Wiltshire.

The visit was part of a routine focused inspection, which takes place between full assessments.

In December 2023, Ofsted awarded the council an Outstanding grade for its work in children's services.

This time, the inspectors paid close attention to the council's arrangements for children in need or subject to a protection plan.

The letter highlighted the council's commitment, investment, and determined action to improve areas that were identified in the previous inspection.

It stated: "Most children who are in need, or in need of protection, make good progress and are supported by effective multi-agency plans."

The inspectors also commended the staff: "The largely permanent workforce is committed and child-focused, led by visible and approachable leaders who work together to improve the lives of children."

The letter further acknowledged the collaborative effort of senior leaders, politicians, and partners to bring about positive change for children in need or subject to a child protection plan.

They recognised the council's ambition to identify and address neglect and cumulative harm at an early stage as making a difference for children.

Parents are supported in making effective changes and improving their parenting skills, with assistance from family key workers.

The children's level of needs are understood, ensuring they receive the most appropriate support and services.

Meetings are held in a timely manner to plan action when concerns escalate for children.

However, the inspectors also suggested actions to further improve the social work practice, including the consistent use of chronologies to inform care planning and timebound actions within children's supervision records.

Councillor Jon Hubbard, cabinet member for children's services, said: "This is a glowing report from Ofsted which is well and truly deserved.

"I have seen the hard-working staff, the ambition for children and young people, and the total dedication and commitment to putting children first and helping make a positive difference in their lives.

"We are never complacent, and we know there is always more to do, but it's heartening to know we are on the right track and that our committing to putting our children and young people at the heart of everything we do is recognised."
