Andrew Cuomo's newly hired mayoral campaign pollster blasted the ex-governor as "arrogant" and "out of touch" in 2021 after he resigned amid sexual misconduct accusations.

Cornell Belcher, a renowned pollster known for working on both of Barack Obama's successful presidential bids, came on board Cuomo's mayoral campaign earlier this month as part of a wider staffing shakeup.

The hire came even though Belcher has a history of pretty harsh words for Cuomo.

In a TV news appearance days after Cuomo announced he was resigning as governor in August 2021, Belcher took issue with Cuomo's claim that he was stepping down, not necessarily because of the sexual harassment accusations against him, but because he didn't want to tarnish his own administration's work.

"The arrogance of man has run its course in politics. ... That sort of arrogant statement that [Cuomo] made is unacceptable," Belcher said in the MSNBC appearance on Aug. 15, 2021, a transcript shows.

Later in the program, as other panelists discussed the possibility of Cuomo eventually making a political comeback, Belcher interjected with a blunt assessment: "He can't win a Democratic primary in New York."

In a tweet later that day linking to his TV comments about Cuomo, Belcher wrote: "Times up for the arrogance of powerful, out-of-touch men in our politics."

Belcher didn't return a request for comment Monday.

A spokesman for Cuomo, who denies the sexual harassment claims against him, suggested Belcher may now regret those comments.

"A lot of people said things years ago before they had all the facts who later went on to endorse, support and work for his campaign because they know Andrew Cuomo is the mayor this city needs," spokesman Rich Azzopardi said.

A number of organizations and politicians who criticized Cuomo in 2021 shifted course and endorsed him ahead of June's Democratic mayoral primary, which he lost to Zohran Mamdani.

Cuomo's staffing shakeup comes as he's trying to step up his independent campaign for mayor as he continues to trail Mamdani in polls of November's general election. In addition to Mamdani and Cuomo, Mayor Adams is running on an independent line on the November ballot and Curtis Sliwa is the Republican candidate.
