Prince Andrew could be in line to receive a payment from King Charles out of his own pocket in exchange for leaving the Royal Lodge where he currently lives.

The disgraced ex-Duke of York - who has consistently denied any wrongdoing - cannot legally be evicted from the 30-room Grade II listed mansion on the Windsor Estate. However he is in talks about quitting the luxury home with Buckingham Palace.

Andrew still reportedly has 50 years to run on his lease of the property, a 'cast iron' agreement that would see him being reimbursed by the Crown Estate, who manage the property, by as much as £500,000 if he were to leave.

The prince was forced to give up all of his royal titles last week after new revelations that he remained in touch with paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein for a longer time than he had previously admitted to.

A source has said that Buckingham Palace is currently trying to 'up the pressure' on the prince to move out of his own accord. However under the terms of his 75-year lease, acquired from the Crown Estate in 2003, Andrew would be owed a massive refund if he were to leave.

Andrew reportedly paid £1million for the tenancy as well as forking out £7.5million for repairs to the mansion, which was agreed to be the equivalent of him paying his lease 'upfront'.

As part of the agreement, he will be due a whopping refund of £557,000 if he leaves the property before next June, with the figure decreasing each year until 2028 when he won't be owed anything if he leaves.

The Crown Estate, which raises money which is paid to the Treasury, will need to be reimbursed for any payment made to Andrew as part of him leaving the Royal Lodge, with the Mail reporting that the King may offer to either reimburse his brother personally, or find a way to pay back the Crown Estate.

A payout from the public purse would thrust the issue of royal finances into the spotlight and lead to a potentially embarrassing situation. There has also been speculation about where Andrew - and possibly his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson who he lives with - will go if they leave.

Andrew has previously refused an offer from the King to move into Andrew Harry and Meghan's old home, Frogmore Cottage. The family own numerous properties around the UK but Andrew is said to want to stay close to London, preferably in or around Windsor, so he can be near his daughters.

Princess Beatrice and Eugenie live in homes at St James' Palace and Kensington Palace respectively and Andrew is understood to want to ensure their futures are protected, the Mail reports that King Charles is in agreement on this point.
