Calls are growing for Prince Andrew to be stripped of his "prince title". It comes as the Metropolitan Police confirmed it is "actively" looking into claims that the disgraced royal tried to obtain personal information about his accuser Virginia Giuffre.

He has been accused of trying to "dig up dirt" about her through his police protection in 2011. The force said on Sunday (October 19): "We are aware of media reporting and are actively looking into the claims made."

Ms Giuffre, who killed herself earlier this year, claimed that she was forced to have sex with the prince on three occasions, including when she was 17. He has consistently denied the allegations.

The latest bombshell on the disgraced royal comes after Ms Giuffre's brother Sky Roberts called on King Charles to strip Andrew of his "prince" title. Prince Andrew has already announced he would stop using his other titles, including the Duke of York.

Mr Roberts said: "I want to commend the King and I want to commend the UK for taking some action. While it may not be enough, in a lot of ways that the survivors view it, it's still a lot more than what we've been given from our own government here, even though we possess the Epstein files.

"Now, for the King, I think there's more that he could do. He does have the ability to strip him even further of the prince title, which we would call upon. I think we've already taken all these necessary steps. Why not just take it another step further and relinquish him of his prince title as well?"

Prince Andrew reportedly asked his police protection to investigate her before a photo of him with her was published in February 2011. He gave the officer her date of birth and confidential social security number.

But it is not known whether the officer made any inquiries about her.

Prince William is "not satisfied" with Andrew's decision to relinquish his titles. The Prince of Wales said he would take a more ruthless approach to his and ban his uncle from all aspects of royal life in the future.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the Government will be "guided" by the Royal Family on any decision to formally strip Prince Andrew of his titles.

Campaign group Republic has called for a wide-ranging inquiry into the Royal Family and accused King Charles and Prince William of being complicit in a cover-up.

Republic's Graham Smith said: "The palace has done the absolute minimum to protect themselves and to keep Andrew out of a court of law. Rather than trivial talk about not attending church or a future coronation, we need to be talking about why Andrew isn't facing criminal charges and why the royals aren't facing an inquiry."

Kensington Palace has declined to comment.

Broadcaster Emily Maitlis said she believes Prince Andrew "lied to me about his contact" with paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein during her explosive 2019 Newsnight interview. A recently surfaced 2011 email purportedly shows the former duke writing to Epstein "we are in this together".

This was sent just months after he had said in the BBC interview to have cut ties with Epstein in December 2010. The broadcaster said it prompted her to rewatch the interview for the first time in six years.

She said: "The email that emerged last week categorically showed that what he said [about his last contact being December 2010] was untrue. I have become more alive to all the inconsistencies.

"It makes you rewatch, revisit everything again. I think we know now that [Prince Andrew] lied to me about his contact with Epstein."
