60% of public restroom toothbrushes contaminated; experts advise care.

A warning from experts has emerged that toothbrushes used daily could become a "habitat for microorganisms" teeming with various bacteria and viruses. Specialists emphasize that proper storage methods are crucial to keeping toothbrushes clean.

The BBC reported, "Toothbrushes are full of bacteria. It's time to replace them," adding, "At this very moment, 1 million to 12 million microorganisms, along with hundreds of species of bacteria and viruses, are inhabiting your toothbrush."

According to the report, Marc-Kevin Zinn, a microbiologist at Germany's Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences, identified three contamination pathways: the user's mouth, skin, and the environment where the toothbrush is stored.

He pointed out, "Warm, humid bathrooms are the optimal environment for contamination, making toothbrushes stored in bathrooms particularly prone to pollution."

Zinn specifically highlighted that tiny droplets containing fecal matter can scatter up to 1.5 meters high when flushing a toilet. These droplets may include bacteria and infectious viruses such as influenza, COVID-19, and norovirus.

If a toothbrush is placed near a toilet, its bristles could be contaminated by bacteria from these droplets, Zinn explained.

A university study indeed found that 60% of student toothbrushes stored in public restrooms tested positive for fecal bacteria.

However, some experts argue that contamination from toilet water is unlikely to cause actual illness.

Erica Hartmann, a professor at Northwestern University in the U.S., stated, "The aerosols generated by flushing toilets are not as problematic as they might seem, as most microorganisms cannot survive long when exposed to air."

The issue lies in certain viruses, such as influenza, COVID-19, and herpes simplex (herpes), which can survive on toothbrush surfaces for up to 48 hours. Consequently, UK health authorities recommend avoiding sharing toothbrushes or allowing them to touch one another.

Experts advise rinsing toothbrushes thoroughly with water after use, standing them upright, and allowing them to air-dry naturally. Covering toothbrushes or storing them in containers is discouraged, as these practices can promote microbial growth.

Additionally, older toothbrushes tend to retain more bacteria, bodily fluids, and food debris in their bristles, so regular replacement is recommended.

The American Dental Association suggests replacing toothbrushes every 3 months. Zinn's research confirmed that bacteria on toothbrushes peak after approximately 12 weeks of use.
