In 2008, we ended up seeing the first frost on Nov. 3 that fall after a similarly cool end to summer. However, last year's first frost in Boston came a week later, on Nov. 13.

In New England, the historical timeframe for the first frost falls within the first two weeks of October over interior portions of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. This fall, a few higher elevations across the northern mountains may see the first frost before September comes to a close, given that the first two weeks of the month have been below average for most of the region.

Coastal Maine and southwest through the interior portions of Central and Southern New England will reach freezing by the end of October.

The South Coast of Massachusetts and the Cape will typically see overnight temperatures drop to the freezing mark during the first half of November.

Despite the cooler end to meteorological summer, the trend of increasing temperatures during the fall months continues. August of 2023 and 2024 were both below average, and the following fall months delivered later dates for the first frost. Over the past 10 years, eight have seen the date of the first frost extend past the climatological (30-year) average.

Since 1970, the city has seen the date of the first frost stretch to a week later, according to Climate Central. A warming climate means a longer growing season for insects and some pollen-producing plants.

Looking at the same data set across the country, the contiguous United States has seen a jump of 2.4 degrees in the average temperature since 1970.

The fall ahead is also looking to be particularly warmer than average across New England. The combination of a weak jet stream, delivering fewer episodes of strong cold snaps, and warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures along the coast indicates that temperatures, especially at night, should run warmer than the norm.

Despite the chilly start to September, long-term models suggest a warmer end to September and into October.

A local weather event may, of course, deliver freezing temperatures earlier this year, but by all indicators, it looks like Boston will stay above freezing for a week to 10 days longer than normal.
