The weekend's weather has seeped into the start of a new work week as cool temps and cloudy skies are expected Monday with chances of showers.

The National Weather Service is still watching the movement of a broad upper-level trough which is centered over the region and should slowly move southeastward through the day.

Indigenous People's Day in Portland will have mostly cloudy skies to start, then gradually clear to mostly sunny by the end of the afternoon. The high temp will reach near 61 degrees. Winds could be gusty at times blowing to about 20 mph.

A check of early Monday morning road camera showed falling snow on the Santiam and Willamette passes. Mount Hood's U.S. 26 had some wet snow on the road but shouldn't see more than a trace over the course of the morning. The Nation Weather Service has a winter weather advisory up in elevations above 4,000 feet warning of new snow amounts from a trace to 2 inches through Monday morning. Areas above 5,000 feet and north of the Three Sisters area could collected as much as 7 inches of new snow Monday.

But that should be the end of this short streak of wet weather for the next few days as a ridge of high pressure builds overhead beginning Tuesday, ushering in a warmer and drier trend through midweek.

Before we get to that, some areas may see frost formation overnight and into early Tuesday. The weather service has issued frost advisories from midnight to 9 a.m. Tuesday across several locations expected turn cold under overnight clearing skies. Frost areas include the Hood River area, Lane County Cascade foothills, Lane and Linn County lowlands, north Oregon Coast Range lowlands, south Washington Cascade foothills, and Cowlitz County lowlands. These areas are likely to see patchy frost and near-freezing temperatures capable of damaging unprotected plants and crops.

Portland will start Tuesday with temps in the low 40s, but then warm to about 65 degrees under sunny skies.

Wednesday will be another clear day with daytime high temperatures reaching near 64 degrees, which is about average during mid-October.

Thursday should be a partly sunny day with high temps cooling to around 60 degrees.

Extended forecasts are not in agreement on what weather we'll see late this week and into the weekend. Some models show continued high pressure and clear skies, while others show a shortwave trough approaching the coast late in the week, bringing increasing cloud cover and light precipitation.
