Australia is bracing for contrasting weather conditions, with intense heat continuing to build across the nation's north and a cold front sweeping through Tasmania, bringing blustery winds and showers.

Sky News Weather Meteorologist Tasmin Green said a trough was drawing "warm and stable air from WA all the way through the interior down to Queensland and at times New South Wales as well", fuelling a spell of hot weather across northern and central regions.

Queensland will be one of the main hotspots, with the potential for afternoon showers and thunderstorms to form across inland areas.

"We might be seeing some locally heavy rainfall totals there, but the chance of anything more severe is generally reduced through Tuesday," Ms Green added.

Brisbane is expected to stay mostly dry, basking under clear skies and reaching around 26°C - a touch cooler than in recent days.

Further south, New South Wales will wake to a chilly start, particularly across the alpine regions where frost, mist and fog are likely.

Temperatures will be climbing as the day goes on with plenty of dry and fine weather expected statewide, though Ms Green warned it might be "a bit breezy along the coast" as a sea breeze develops later in the day.

Victoria will see similar conditions, with another cold morning and patchy frost possible across agricultural areas.

The state may see "just an isolated shower or two, generally south of the divide, but a good deal of dry weather elsewhere with temperatures around average for the time of year," Ms Green explained.

Tasmania, meanwhile, will feel the brunt of a cold front moving through the morning and lingering over western parts of the island later in the day.

The front would bring showers and "blustery and gusty" winds to the state's south and west, where conditions will feel unsettled despite a slight rise in temperatures to around 18-20°C.

In South Australia, most regions will enjoy settled weather and clear skies, although "perhaps just one or two showers out to the southeast," Ms Green said, adding warmer and sunnier conditions are expected further north and west.

Western Australia will remain largely under the influence of a high pressure system, keeping things dry for most of the state.

However, the weather will be more unsettled in the north.

Ms Green explained "we might be seeing some showers further north, generally up to the eastern Pilbara and towards the Kimberley," where humid conditions are likely to trigger more storms throughout the day.

Across the Top End and into the Kimberley, thunderstorms and muggy heat will persist, with showers set to develop early and intensify through the afternoon.

Elsewhere across the nation, a high pressure system will ensure dry skies and comfortable spring warmth - a brief calm before what is expected to be a turbulent mix of heat, storms and cold fronts in the weeks ahead.
