The UK is set to face a bitter cold snap in the coming days, with weather maps predicting temperatures could plummet to as low as -3C. The icy conditions are forecasted to strike on Thursday, 23 October, according to the maps, causing a chill across many parts of the country.

WXCharts weather maps, created on 12 October using Met Desk data, suggest that the frosty weather will start to sweep into the country from midnight on 23 October. Initially, only areas around Fort William are expected to feel the brunt of the cold.

However, as the day progresses, the freezing conditions are predicted to spread, with places like Portree and Glencoe potentially seeing temperatures drop to -3C.

Cities including Edinburgh, Inverness, Wick, Aberdeen and Glasgow are likely to experience temperatures hovering between -1 and 0C by midday, the charts indicate.

Other regions such as Newcastle, Middlesbrough, York, and the Yorkshire Dales may also feel the chill, with daytime temperatures predicted to sit around 0 and 1C, reports the Express.

Even southern parts of the country aren't immune, with the mercury expected to fall to single digits. Parts of London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, and Gloucester could see temperatures of 3 and 4C, according to the maps.

The Met Office's long-range forecast for 17-26 October states: "High pressure is expected to dominate the UK weather at the start of this period.

"Whilst a little rain and drizzle is likely in parts of the southeast and north, mainly over the higher ground, much of the UK will be predominantly dry.

"Cloud amounts will be variable but often large, although there will be some spells of sunshine. There are likely to be some fog patches overnight, slowly clearing through the morning.

"Temperatures are likely to be close to normal for the time of year overall.

"During the second half of this period, there are signs that the general pattern will shift with low pressure systems probably moving in from the west in some fashion. However, details of any more unsettled weather are still very uncertain."

This evening and tonight:

Following a calm evening, the night will remain largely dry with the clearest conditions expected in western areas. Eastern regions will see increasing cloud cover along with hill fog.

Temperatures will drop with some patchy fog developing under the clearest skies, particularly across Scotland and northern England.

Monday:

Early morning fog will lift, leaving rather overcast conditions with sunshine restricted to northern England and much of Scotland. Cloud cover will be dense enough to produce light drizzle in some locations.

It will feel rather cool beneath the cloud.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

High pressure continues to dominate, bringing generally cloudy but mainly dry conditions. Occasional light drizzle remains possible, along with some overnight fog patches.

Temperatures will stay close to seasonal averages.
