The San Francisco 49ers' time of possession, 18:39, was the lowest of the Kyle Shanahan era by more than four minutes, and the second-lowest for the franchise since 2000, per TruMedia

The Texans ran 80 plays versus 48 for the 49ers, and they were good on third downs (9 of 16), which had been a strength for San Francisco's defense prior to Sunday.

The 49ers' fastest ball carrier on Sunday? Was it Christian McCaffrey, Kendrick Bourne or perhaps kick returner Brian Robinson Jr.? Nope. According to Next Gen Stats, it was Jones, who reached 17.35 mph on a third-quarter scramble.

While that might be a feather in Jones' cap, it underscores the 49ers' lack of explosion on offense in general and on Sunday in particular. Jones, who's never been known for his wheels, was playing with a knee brace and in obvious pain in the second half. The 17.35 mph was the lowest "fastest speed" for any team in Week 8.

Jones was also on Shanahan's Monday afternoon injury report with a knee bruise. He's day to day. As for Brock Purdy (toe) and whether he could play Sunday versus the New York Giants, Shanahan said the team would take a wait-and-see approach. "It's too early to say," he said. "I don't think it's a long shot. I know he's doing better, and we'll see how he's doing Wednesday. Hopefully, if he's doing good, he'll get some reps."

Running back: McCaffrey 46, Kyle Juszczyk (fullback) 20, Robinson 2

It's hard to establish a running game when the offense runs only 14 plays in the first half. That largely explains McCaffrey's modest rushing performance. His 25 yards were his lowest rushing output since Week 17 of the 2018 season, a game in which he played just 10 snaps for the Carolina Panthers (four rushes, 18 yards).

McCaffrey, who entered with a league-high 26 touches per game, had just 11 on Sunday. He's still on pace to finish the season with 1,041 rushing yards and 1,188 receiving yards.

Receiver: Jauan Jennings 41, Bourne 38, Demarcus Robinson 27, Skyy Moore 9, Jordan Watkins 6

Last year, it seemed as if Jennings would come down with any pass in his general orbit. This year? He's been 50-50 on contested targets and was 1 of 3 in that category Sunday. Jennings did come down with a tough catch at the Houston 1-yard line in the third quarter. But it's clear the combination of injuries and lack of practice is affecting his performance. His 37.3 run blocking grade from Pro Football Focus is by far the lowest of his career.

Watkins, who made his NFL debut Sunday, got his first-ever catch in the fourth quarter. However, he let one of Jones' best throws of the day slip through his hands on the previous possession.

Shanahan said Brandon Aiyuk (PUP/ACL) remains week to week but that there are no plans to open his 21-day practice window this week.

Tight end: George Kittle 43, Jake Tonges 5, Luke Farrell 3

Kittle had a touchdown catch in the second quarter and might have had another in the third if Tonges, running a parallel route, hadn't snatched Jones' fastball for the score. The 49ers were in 23 personnel -- two running backs, three tight ends -- on the play, which has been effective around the goal line this season.

"Mac told me he was throwing to me," Kittle said afterward. "Jake just (had) sticky fingers. I'm glad he caught it. I would have been mad if he'd have tipped it up and it went out of bounds. It's good for the tight ends to score on National Tight Ends Day."

Offensive line: Colton McKivitz 48, Dominick Puni 48, Matt Hennessy 48, Trent Williams 48, Connor Colby 29, Nick Zakelj 19

The 49ers allowed 16 quarterback pressures, seven of them to Texans edge rusher Will Anderson, who was a handful for McKivitz on Sunday.

Last week, the 49ers started to rotate Zakelj and Colby at left guard, but they gave up on that plan once center Jake Brendel got hurt. (Zakelj became the backup center once Brendel left the game.)

They followed through with that plan in Houston. Zakelj, who was elevated from the practice squad, gave up two pressures in 19 pass-block situations. Colby gave up one in 20 such situations. Shanahan said the team plans to open Ben Bartch's practice window on Wednesday. Bartch, the starter at left guard to begin the season, hasn't played since suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 2.

Pressures allowed:

Defensive line: Alfred Collins 54, Mykel Williams 53, Sam Okuayinonu 46, Kalia Davis 43, Trevis Gipson 39, Robert Beal 35, Kevin Givens 32, Jordan Elliott 18

Every lineman but Okuayaninu and Elliott had a season high in snaps, something to keep in mind as the 49ers prepare for their longest flight of the season and another 10 a.m. PST kickoff.

Early in the season, the 49ers' pass-rush package featured Nick Bosa and Bryce Huff at defensive end. On Sunday, Okuayinonu and Gipson were bookends on 11 of Houston's 16 third-down snaps. Both were credited with a single quarterback pressure. Okuayinonu's came in the second quarter when he tripped C.J. Stroud as he threw. It was the only time the 49ers knocked down Stroud all game. Beal had no pressures on 15 pass-rush snaps.

The 49ers are out of practice squad elevations for Gipson, meaning they'd have to sign him to the 53-man roster -- and move someone else off the active roster -- to play against the Giants. Shanahan said Okuayinonu (ankle), Elliott (ankle) and Collins (shoulder) will be day to day this week.

The 49ers blitzed a season-high 14 times and sent a variety of extra rushers, from Winters to safety Malik Mustapha to nickel corner Upton Stout. Winters was the most effective, pressuring Stroud twice.

But none of it worked. Stroud was 11 of 13 with a 121.2 passer rating when blitzed. His 30-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Hutchinson in the third quarter came when the 49ers sent six pass rushers.

Winters (knee) left the game with a knee injury and will be day to day this week. He was replaced by Robinson, who is ahead of rookie Nick Martin in the linebacker pecking order, at weakside linebacker. Shanahan said Martin would get a chance to prove himself should Winters not be able to practice this week.

Bethune led the 49ers in tackles (game-high 14) for the third straight outing. However, he was likely the culprit on running back Woody Marks' 50-yard catch and run in the first quarter.

"We dropped a man in coverage on a 50-yard checkdown," Shanahan said. "We got hung up on the quarterback -- we've got to stay on the guy (Marks) in man."

Cornerback: Deommodore Lenoir 80, Renardo Green 80, Upton Stout 48, Chase Lucas 3

Stout had a mixed game, finishing with a season-best nine tackles but also coming away with two missed tackles. He and Winters are tied for the team lead in missed tackles this season with seven apiece.

The Texans also completed 7 of 8 passes on which Stout was targeted. On the season, he's allowed catches on 27 of 35 targets for 242 yards but no touchdowns.

Safety: Ji'Ayir Brown 80, Malik Mustapha 80, Jason Pinnock 2

Rookie Marques Sigle, who'd started the first seven games, not only didn't start Sunday, but he didn't play any defensive snaps. His snaps instead went to Mustapha, his first full game since recovering from last year's ACL injury.

Mustapha and Brown weren't very good in coverage. Brown also had two missed tackles, though he was aggressive in run support, finishing with two tackles for loss.

Neal, Morstead and Brian Robinson were the top special teamers on Sunday. Neal had one tackle on kick coverage, one on punt coverage and downed one of Morstead's punts at the 6-yard line. Morstead had three punts inside the 20-yard line. He's tied for fourth place in that category with 12 this season.

Robinson's 46-yard kickoff return -- which doesn't include the facemask penalty that was tacked on -- was the 49ers' longest of the season. In fact, his 30-yard return in the first quarter was the team's fourth-longest of the season.
