Barcelona have confirmed Sunday's La Liga fixture against Getafe will take place at the 6,000-capacity Estadi Johan Cruyff.

Barcelona played their first La Liga home match of the season, Sunday's victory over Valencia, at the ground where their reserve and women's teams play as their return to Camp Nou continues to be delayed.

The club confirmed five days before Sunday's match against Getafe that they would again play at Estadi Johan Cruyff but provided no further clarity over where they intend to host their home fixtures for the remainder of the campaign.

"The club continues to work intensively to obtain the necessary administrative permits for the opening of Spotify Camp Nou in the near future," a club statement read.

Barca explained season ticket holders from the previous two campaigns who were unable to attend the win over Valencia would be given priority for the weekend's fixture.

Barca have been unable to return to Camp Nou following delays and uncertainty around the stadium's reconstruction project, which began in June 2023.

Plans had been put in place to open the ground at a reduced capacity of around 27,000 in time for their opening home La Liga match of the season last weekend, but this did not materialise.

The club still do not have the necessary permits from the Barcelona city council to open the venue, and nor have any test events been held. It is still undergoing renovations that are a long way from being fully finished.

Barca have not played at the Camp Nou since starting a €1.5billion refurbishment of the ground and surrounding area in June 2023, hosting games at the 55,000-capacity Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, a short distance across the city on Montjuic, over the past two seasons.

The stadium was not available for Barca's opening two home La Liga fixtures due to a Post Malone concert that took place at the ground on September 12.

Following Sunday's fixture against Getafe, Barcelona host Real Sociedad in La Liga on September 28 and play their first home Champions League game against European champions Paris Saint-Germain on October 1.

The Camp Nou return will have to wait a few more weeks, and Barcelona had no other option than to return at the 6,000-capacity Johan Cruyff stadium. This was inevitable as the Lluis Companys stadium, in Montjuic, which still remains an option for future games this season, could hardly have a brand new football pitch installed by next Sunday when the Catalans face Getafe.

The latest news from Camp Nou is that Barcelona city council have effectively received "various documentation", as sources told The Athletic, from the club and are trying to make progress with getting all the licenses required. Barca sources, however, admit they sill don't have the Certificat de Final d'Obra (CFO) -- the ultimate certification to then be allowed to reopen.

The best-case scenario now for the club is to hold a game at reduced capacity at Camp Nou the following weekend, on September 28, when they face Real Sociedad. Sources inside Barca believe it will be tight, but there are still big chances of the return happening on that date.

We also need to bear in mind that, on September 28, Estadio Lluis Companys won't be available either given the local festivities of Festes de la Merce in Barcelona, which ends in a traditional firework display in the Montjuic area. The event will require the closure of multiple areas that impact the stadium's accessibility.

Beyond that there is the Champions League. Barcelona's first home game is on October 1. It still remains to be seen if the Camp Nou will meet all the required criteria by UEFA, but from that date the club admits that the Estadio Lluis Companys should be available for them.
