Blackpool Sands in South Devon is hailed as one of the most picturesque coastal destinations in the UK.

In contrast to the typical beaches found in the southeast, this protected cove in the southwest showcases verdant vegetation and undulating hillsides.

Its transparent waters and secluded setting draw both locals and tourists, particularly during the warmer months.

Most recently, outdoor specialists at Millets crowned it amongst the nation's finest beaches for autumn getaways.

The study assessed beaches based on criteria such as average autumn temperatures, precipitation levels, daily sunshine hours, and Google review ratings, positioning Blackpool Sands in fifth place within a top 10 ranking, reports the Express.

Achieving an exceptional overall rating of 8.06 out of 10, it's evident that the beach's numerous facilities and breathtaking setting strike a chord with guests.

Natalie Wolfenden, a hiking enthusiast at Millets, emphasised that autumn represents the "perfect time to enjoy long walks along the coast away from the summer crowds".

Yet, notwithstanding its splendour and impressive scores, the beach is marred by one particular aspect that leaves numerous visitors disappointed.

For a beach bearing the name "Sands," a substantial number of guests are caught off guard to find that it is, in reality, composed of shingle.

This "misnomer," as one critic characterised it, has resulted in countless complaints from ill-prepared beachgoers.

On TripAdvisor, many have voiced their dissatisfaction, with one individual remarking: "Don't be fooled by the name it's not sandy just shingles. We drove a long way to visit here and were so disappointed, the shingles were so sharp you couldn't walk barefoot."

Another visitor remarked: "Nice beach but the name lies! This is NOT a sandy beach. Parking is easy, if not a little expensive (£9 for the day). Shingle is painful on bare feet and the sea goes deep quickly so not good for small children. But if you are prepared for this, it is a good day out."

This view is shared by others who described the pebbles as "unforgiving" or "harsh" underfoot.

That said, the shingle becomes far less problematic during an autumn trip, when you're likely to be wearing robust walking boots regardless.

The shore's golden pebbles and evergreen setting take on an especially striking and wild character during the colder seasons, with the coastline appearing "really stunning" according to one visitor.

It also serves as a perfect launch point for a ramble.

The South West Coast Path runs alongside the shore, presenting a magnificent 3.2-mile circular route to the village of Strete.

The trail takes you high above the bay, delivering spectacular vistas of the coastline stretching all the way to Start Point with its lighthouse.

For those willing to brave a plunge in the sea, there is an unusual wooden beach sauna on offer for hire throughout the year.

Whilst you may still have to face chilly waters, the sauna provides a welcome treat after your swim.

For sauna visitors, a wooden boardwalk leads directly down to the sea, meaning the challenge of walking barefoot on the shingle becomes minimal for a genuinely revitalising experience.

Apart from the shingle, Blackpool Sands offers a range of amenities that contribute to its excellent reputation. Blackpool Sands is far more accessible than many of Devon's other renowned beaches, like Hope Cove and Sunny Cove, boasting ample parking and top-notch on-site facilities.

The cafe-restaurant and takeaway kiosk usually operate daily from 9am to 5pm, although their hours may be reduced during the chillier months.
