DETROIT -- Braves first baseman Matt Olson is finishing the season with such a furious flurry of offense that he could wind up with his fourth 30-homer, 100-RBI season in the last five, including his third in four seasons since being traded to Atlanta.

But the fact that he's done it for a Braves team that will miss the postseason for the first time since 2017, and also finish under .500 for the first time since then, obviously makes the numbers less satisfying for Olson, whom his manager calls an "ultimate teammate" type of player.

"You keep showing up and playing every day," said Olson, who had an RBI double in the second inning of the Braves' 10-1 series-opening rout against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, making it seven consecutive games in which he's had at least one extra-base hit and one RBI, the majors' longest active streaks in both categories. "No matter what time of the year or what the situation is, you go out there and try to ball out."

In the Braves' season-high sixth consecutive win, they got two-run homers from Ronald Acuña Jr., Ha-Seong Kim and Drake Baldwin, and seven innings of one-run, five-hit ball from Bryce Elder for a fifth strong start in his last six.

Olson is on a torrid stretch in which he's hit .469 with 10 extra-base hits, including five home runs, 12 runs and 12 RBIs. His double Friday raised his NL-leading total to 40, and with eight games left on the schedule, Olson needs two home runs and seven RBIs for a 30-100 season.

"These games still matter to everybody. Every at-bat matters and just keep grinding," said Olson, an Atlanta-area native and former Parkview High School star who just wishes these games were the lead-in to another postseason appearance, after the team's unceremonious one-and-done exits from each of his first three postseasons with the Braves.

The last time the Braves weren't in the postseason was Olson's rookie year with Oakland in 2017, when he was 23 and announced his presence with 24 home runs and a 1.003 OPS in just 59 games for the Athletics.

He's never matched that OPS or homered at such a dizzying rate, but Olson gave it a run in 2023, when he hit a career-best .283 and set franchise records for home runs (54) and RBIs (139) while posting an NL-best .604 slugging percentage and .993 OPS.

Like most other Braves from that juggernaut season, Olson had plenty of statistical slippage in 2024, hitting just .247 with a .790 OPS and finishing with 29 homers and 98 RBIs for an injury-ravaged Braves team that made the playoffs on the final day of the season, then got swept in a two-game wild-card series at San Diego.

That made it three years in a row without a playoff series win for the Braves since 2021, when they won the World Series in Freddie Freeman's final season at first base for Atlanta. Filling the shoes of Freeman, the 2020 MVP and beloved Brave for 12 seasons, was going to be just about an impossible task for anyone.

But Olson has come about as close as anyone could, and done so while performing admirably on the field and remaining a steadfast positive presence in the clubhouse, never once complaining or rolling his eyes or anything else over the endless questions and comparisons to Freeman, a player he had long admired and still does.

"He handled both," Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Olson coming home to play in Atlanta and replacing a modern franchise icon. "I don't know if people realize that when you go home and play, it's a bigger deal than what you might think. You know, we've had a few of those homegrown guys, and I know from being with them, that's a big weight on your shoulders. How he handles everything is unbelievable.

"To be successful -- that always blows me away with those boring pro guys that come every day and then play every day, and they have great careers, long careers. Because they don't ride those crests and have the highs and lows. They're just the same guy every day regardless, and I think that speaks volumes to a player like that."

Olson and the Braves had hoped to stay healthy and make a deep October run this season. They did neither. Which is why the third Gold Glove that Olson seems almost certain to win -- his metric stats are far and away the best among NL first basemen -- and his second-half hitting spree aren't going to make it a satisfying season for him.

"It's always going to be how the team ends up," said Olson, 31, who leads active major leaguers with 774 consecutive games played, including every Braves game since he was traded to the team before the 2022 season. "And a couple of first-round exits, and these last two years where I feel like we've been fighting a little bit to get to where we think we should be. So, I don't think anybody's ever going to be pleased with that. The goal is to win, and to win a championship."

What about the Gold Glove, which would be his first in the NL and first since 2019? Olson had 17 defensive runs saved (DRS) before Friday, while the next-most among MLB first basemen was Carlos Santana's 11.

"It's definitely something you strive for every year," Olson said. "I feel like I played pretty good defense last year. The year or two before that, it didn't quite feel like I was making the plays that I should be. But defense sometimes kind of goes in swings, like hitting. To feel like I've been back on my game a little better with the defense is something I've been happy with."

After the first 44 games this season, Olson was hitting a meager .214 with seven homers and a .720 OPS. Now, he's flirting with another 30-100 season, batting .281 with an .870 OPS.

"He battled through the tough times to get to this position," Snitker said. "And he's another one that does it every day. He works at it. He studies it. Believes in himself. He is that ultimate boring pro. Every day he has the same attitude. Every day he comes to the ballpark, he's the same guy.

"And I'm sure now that he's a father, he probably doesn't have a lot of sleep or whatever, but you'd never know if he's on a 10-game hitless streak or 20-game hit streak when he comes through that door. He's the same guy. And I think that allows him to perform and to be an everyday guy like he is."

On the sixth pitch of Friday's game, old friend Charlie Morton hit Olson in the back foot with a 1-1 curveball to become just the fifth pitcher in major-league history to hit 200 or more batters.

"The crazy crazy thing is, I thought about swinging at it for a second," said Olson, a Braves teammate of Morton's during the 2022-2024 seasons. "That's Charlie's curveball. We've all seen it, but it's so nasty that you're gonna see some weird takes and some weird swings at it. Just glad I didn't do the swing-and-get-hit-by-a-pitch thing."

Morton lasted only four outs before exiting with a 6-0 deficit, the most runs he's allowed in a start that short or shorter since giving up six in two-thirds of an inning in a start for Atlanta in May 2021.

But before leaving Friday, he moved into the pitching pantheon of pain infliction, as it were.

Morton only needs to hit five more batters to catch Walter "Big Train" Johnson, who hit 205 in 5,914 1/3 innings. That's compared to Morton's 200 in 2,266 1/3 innings.

But Morton will be 42 in November, and the 18-year veteran hasn't said if he'll retire after the season.

All of the other 16 pitchers among the top 17 in hit batters had more than 3,000 innings pitched, all except Morton.

The three ahead of Morton and Johnson: Pink Hawley hit 210 batters in 3,012 2/3 innings; Chick Fraser hit 219 in 3,364 innings; and the undisputed king of plunking, Gus Weyhing, hit 277 batters in 4,337 innings between 1887 and 1901, including majors-leading totals of 37 and 42 hit batters in his first two seasons.

Weyhing also had a majors-leading 56 wild pitches in that memorable second season with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1888, when he still put together an impressive 28-18 record and 2.25 ERA in 47 starts, including 45 complete games, and allowed only four homers in 404 innings.

He likely wasn't hitting batters repeatedly with back-foot curveballs, as Morton has done to left-handers for a vast majority of his hit batters.

The irony is, one of the game's nicest guys, Morton, has hit more batters than any other active pitcher.

"Yeah, just from playing with him, you know he hates it," Olson said, smiling. "He always cares about the person that gets hit. It's like, it's okay, Chuck."
