The Colorado Rapids and head coach Chris Armas have mutually agreed to part ways, the club announced Monday.

Armas' contract expired after this season, and while there were contract negotiations, the sides decided to move on. The move means there are now five open head coaching jobs in MLS: Atlanta United, Sporting KC, New York Red Bulls, St. Louis City and New England, while LAFC's job will open up at the end of the season following Steve Cherundolo's pre-planned departure.

Armas departs after two seasons in charge of the club. Colorado missed the playoffs in 2025 after making it in Armas' first year and earning a third-place Leagues Cup finish along the way.

"We're grateful to Chris for the professionalism and passion he brought to the club," Colorado Rapids president Pádraig Smith said in a club statement. "He helped our group take meaningful steps forward over the past two seasons and leaves behind a strong culture that will serve us well as we begin this next chapter."

The Rapids finished 11th in the West with 41 points this season.

For whomever succeeds Armas, they'll be walking into a Colorado squad that is headlined by club-record signing Paxten Aaronson, forward Rafa Navarro and U.S. national team goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

Before joining the Rapids, Armas previously had two stints as an MLS head coach, most recently with Toronto FC in 2021, but was let go after only 11 league matches. Before that, he won a Supporters' Shield with the New York Red Bulls in 2018, taking over during the season after Jesse Marsch left for RB Leipzig. Armas went 33-27-11 with the Red Bulls. He then went on to serve as an assistant at Manchester United under Ralf Rangnick during the 2021-22 Premier League season and with Leeds United briefly under Marsch in 2023.

During his decorated playing career, Armas was named MLS best XI five times, won MLS Cup and four U.S. Open Cups with the Chicago Fire. He made 66 appearances with the U.S. men's national team between 1998 and 2005.
