Crystal Palace have been fined €10,000 (£8,693) by UEFA for a banner displayed by their supporters against Fredrikstad in their Conference League play-off game.

They received the sanction for bringing UEFA into disrepute and transmitting a message that is not fit for a sports event under articles 16(2)(e) and 11(2)(d) of UEFA's regulations.

Palace fans displayed a banner with the words 'UEFA MAFIA' on a version of the body's logo with a Euro symbol replacing the map of Europe.

The banner was evident in the Community Shield against Liverpool at Wembley, the goal-less Premier League draw away to Chelsea on the opening weekend of the league season and the first leg at home against Fredrikstad, which Palace won 1-0.

It came after the south London club were demoted to the Conference League -- Europe's third-tier club competition -- from the Europa League for breaching multi-club ownership (MCO) rules. Nottingham Forest replaced them in the Europa League.

Palace initially qualified for the Europa League by winning the 2024-25 FA Cup, Eberechi Eze scoring the only goal in the Wembley final against Manchester City.

UEFA, however, ruled that Eagle Football's 43 per cent stake in Palace -- via its chairman John Textor -- was in conflict with its majority stake in French side Lyon after both clubs qualified for the second-tier European competition.

Lyon took precedence over Palace, who finished 12th in the Premier League last term, owing to the higher domestic finish of sixth in Ligue 1.

Eagle Football has subsequently sold their stake in Palace to Woody Johnson.

Palace fans are unlikely to be deterred by this fine, not least because it does not affect them directly. They remain steadfast in their belief that they were wronged by UEFA and have made their feelings clear at every opportunity.

Whether they will bring it back for future games is uncertain but there is a strong chance that it will make an appearance again at Selhurst Park during their Conference League fixtures.

They may well face more stringent checks on what they bring into the ground after this decision by UEFA -- but the anti-UEFA chants that have become so prevalent since the issue first arose will certainly remain a constant on their repertoire of songs.
