FRANKFURT (Kyodo) -- Japan attacker Ritsu Doan forced an own goal on his Champions League debut as Eintracht Frankfurt hammered Galatasaray 5-1 at home on Thursday, while Monaco's Takumi Minamino and Sporting CP's Hidemasa Morita both registered assists.

Doan stole the ball at the edge of the opposition box before his shot went in off Davinson Sanchez in the 37th minute at Frankfurt Stadion, canceling out Yunus Akgun's eighth-minute opener for the Turkish visitors in their league-phase opener.

"We were losing and the atmosphere inside the stadium wasn't good. It was an extremely important goal that gave us the momentum," Doan said.

Can Uzun found the top corner from inside the box before Jonathan Burkardt's free-kick from deep went straight in as Frankfurt scored twice in the first-half stoppage time to turn things around.

Poor Galatasaray defending saw Burkardt net his second with a header in the 66th minute and Ansgar Knauff slot home nine minutes later as the German side got off to a strong start.

"The biggest reason why I came to Europe was to stand on this stage," Doan said. "I'm glad to have got a big win like this in the first game and contributed to the team's victory."

Monaco suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at Club Brugge after Minamino and his teammates could only travel to Belgium on the day of the game due to a plane issue.

Mika Biereth drew a penalty after latching onto Minamino's pass into the box, but Maghnes Akliouche had a spot kick saved in the 10th minute before the home team bagged three first-half goals and got their fourth in the 75th minute.

Minamino did set up a consolation goal, nevertheless, controlling a deep cross before laying the ball off for Ansu Fati to slam home in the second-half stoppage time.

Morita, who has missed the Portuguese league action since late August, came on in the 61st minute in Sporting's 4-1 home win over Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan. The midfielder set up Geovany Quenda seven minutes later for their last goal of the match.
