JAKARTA (Kyodo) -- Japan's Daiki Hashimoto seized his third straight men's individual all-around title at the artistic gymnastics world championships on Wednesday, a feat only achieved previously by fellow countryman and icon Kohei Uchimura.

Hashimoto, who won gold in the individual all-around at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 as well as at worlds in 2022 and 2023, returned to the top of the podium in Jakarta after a sixth-place finish at the Summer Games in Paris last year, where he was hampered by an injury to his right middle finger.

In the Indonesian capital, the 24-year-old had taken the lead going into his final apparatus, the horizontal bar, and nailed his landing to score 14.700 for a total of 85.131 points in the final.

Hashimoto's consistency across all six apparatuses carried him to the win, edging out Chinese runner-up Zhang Boheng's 84.333, with Switzerland's Noe Seifert finishing third at 82.831.

"I won through perseverance. I'm glad I've managed to perform while trusting myself right until the very end," Hashimoto said.

"It felt really nice the moment I landed perfectly," he added. "I was able to perform without letting my guard down while also being focused, and that brought me the result."

Following last year's Summer Games, which saw him miss the podium as fellow Japanese Shinnosuke Oka took the all-around individual gold, Hashimoto was relieved of some of the pressure that went along with being seen as Uchimura's heir. Uchimura won Olympic golds in the event in 2012 and 2016 as well as six consecutive world titles between 2009 and 2015.

"Now I'm purely, really enjoying gymnastics," said Hashimoto, who is happy to have a shot at Uchimura's astonishing six straight worlds.

"I think of him as superhuman...(and) I want to do something that is superhuman too," he said. "Having a chance to challenge that is one of the joys of my life."

Oka, meanwhile, had been in the lead in Jakarta until his fourth apparatus, the floor exercise, during which the 21-year-old fell on his back, derailing his title bid with a score of 11.866. He eventually finished fifth with 81.797 points total.

"I made mistakes, but I was able to produce the best performance I could at the moment," said Oka, who hurt his lower back during qualifying, in which he finished 12th.

"I really enjoyed it, but it was a tournament where I also found my weaknesses," he said. "I'll look back on the things I was lacking and hope to do better next time."
