TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Yokozuna Hoshoryu deployed his trademark underarm throw against No. 2 maegashira Oho to remain the undefeated outright leader at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on Friday.

Fellow grand champion Onosato, ozeki Kotozakura and new Ukrainian komusubi Aonishiki also notched victories to stay on the second rung of the leaderboard among eight men at 5-1 on Day 6 of the 15-day tournament.

Oho came into the day's final bout at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan arena leading Hoshoryu 5-3 in their head-to-head series, with the most recent win courtesy of the yokozuna's injury forfeit at the July tournament in Nagoya.

The Mongolian-born grand champion was in control from the outset, getting in close and moving Oho (2-4) toward the edge before tossing him to the sandy surface. The victory extended Hoshoryu's best start as a yokozuna following injury withdrawals from two of his three previous meets at the top rank.

Onosato made short work of No. 3 maegashira Atamifuji, who was winless in five past meetings between the pair. The four-time Emperor's Cup winner never looked in danger, getting inside at the opening clash and driving Atamifuji (1-5) straight out.

Kotozakura executed an impressive arm-lock throw to knock No. 4 maegashira Hiradoumi (4-2) off the leaderboard after withstanding a vigorous opening attack from the former komusubi.

Fast-rising talent Aonishiki defeated veteran Takayasu in their komusubi battle, enduring a flurry of blows to the face and body before getting inside and forcing the still-winless former ozeki over the edge.

Sekiwake Wakatakakage (4-2) continued his bid for ozeki promotion with a thrust down against struggling No. 3 maegashira Gonoyama (0-6), while sekiwake Kirishima (4-2) suffered his second straight loss after being thrust out by fellow Mongolian-born wrestler Tamawashi (3-3), competing as a No. 1 maegashira.

Former sekiwake and current No. 5 maegashira Wakamotoharu (5-1) kept his place among the one-loss group by crushing out former college star Kusano (2-4), fighting at No. 6 maegashira following his stellar 11-4 top-division debut in July.

The winner of the July tournament, No. 5 maegashira Kotoshoho, dropped to 2-4 with his third straight loss at the hands of former sekiwake and current No. 7 maegashira Takanosho, who also stayed on the second rung at 5-1.
