LONDON (Kyodo) -- The cast of Japan's production of "Six" will perform the British stage musical entirely in Japanese next month in London's West End theater district, making it the first such piece to be staged locally in the Asian language, according to organizers.

The musical is about the six wives of the 16th-century King of England Henry VIII, reimagining the women as pop stars in a girl group.

Following its premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe arts festival in 2017, the British musical garnered a huge following and spawned several international productions, including in Japan and the United States.

Speaking at a media event on Thursday, producer Kenny Wax said the idea to bring the Japanese cast to London came about spontaneously after he and the show's creators were impressed with their performance.

"The Japanese company threw themselves into the process with vigor and were really wonderful," he said.

Lucy Moss, one of the show's creators, added that when she saw the performance, she thought, "Oh my gosh, people in London need to see this company."

The original lyrics were adapted for the Japanese version and subsequently translated back into English to be displayed as subtitles on 10 screens within the theater.

Works of theater inspired by Japanese culture have become popular in Britain in recent years.

Stage plays based on the Studio Ghibli films "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Spirited Away" were both massive hits in London, with the latter also performed entirely in Japanese with English subtitles.

While such pieces were developed from original Japanese works, "Six" director Hiroko Murata pointed out that the musical created in Britain and adapted for Japanese stages is now returning "like a cycle."

Bringing the Japanese-language version back to London is "going to the next step" beyond adapting the work, she added. "It's very exciting to be performing this in Japanese, in our own language, here in front of a British audience."

The musical will be performed at the West End's Vaudeville Theatre, where the original "Six" is usually shown, eight times between Nov. 4 and Nov. 9.

Actresses Sonim and Maho Minamoto of the Japanese production -- who play the roles of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, respectively -- expressed their gratitude to be bringing the show to London after they gave a short performance for the press.

Minamoto said, "I never imagined I'd be able to say, 'It's real, I'm actually standing here in the Vaudeville Theater.'"

She added that she "really felt a strong sense of purpose, as a professional, to properly deliver 'Six' in this theater."

Alongside the performances, a series of workshops will be conducted at the theater, including "Six"-themed Japanese language lessons.

The organizers said they hope this will be another way for audiences to connect with the language and culture of Japan.
