The New York Jets will join the group of teams calling on backups in Week 3, as quarterback Justin Fields has been ruled out ahead of the team's Sunday matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coach Aaron Glenn announced Wednesday. Tyrod Taylor will start for the Jets

Fields left last Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills early in the fourth quarter, entering concussion protocol after a hit from defensive end Joey Bosa. He completed 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards before exiting the 30-10 loss. Taylor played the rest of the game.

Now that Taylor will officially be the Jets starter in Week 3, it will be interesting to see how much offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand opens up the offense. When Fields was playing, the Jets coaching staff tried to limit how much improvisation Fields was operating with by hammering home the message: Take what the defense gives you. But that's not how Taylor plays.

In theory, the offensive style shouldn't change much -- this is still a run-first operation -- but Taylor is not the same athlete nor passer as Fields. Namely: He's going to fire off deep shots at will because that's his style, and at his best Taylor is one of the better deep throwers in the NFL, even now at 35 years old. The last time he received significant playing time was in 2023 when he started five games. In just five games, he still finished among the league leaders in "big time throws," per Pro Football Focus, and had the highest-percentage of big-time throws (8.9 percent) among all quarterbacks with at least 150 drop backs. Among quarterbacks with at least 20 deep (20-plus yards in the air) attempts, Taylor had the third-highest percentage of deep attempts (15 percent) and converted 11 of 27 passes.

The downside of Taylor is that he has a propensity for holding onto the ball too long, which sometimes leads to big hits and, more often than not, injury issues. He's rarely stayed healthy in his NFL career -- and his backup is undrafted rookie Brady Cook, currently on the practice squad.
