Kim Min-jae's 94% success, key blocks earn German praise after five-month break

Bayern defeated Hoffenheim 4-1 in the fourth round of the 2025-2026 Bundesliga season, held at the PreZero Arena in Sinsheim, Germany, on the 20th (Korean time).

It was a one-sided victory. Bayern earned three penalty kicks, securing a decisive win with Harry Kane's hat-trick and Serge Gnabry's last-minute goal. Although they conceded a goal to Vladimir Choupal in the closing stages, it did not affect the outcome. Bayern set a Bundesliga record by scoring 18 goals in their first four matches of the season.

Naturally, Kane became the star of the game. Germany's 'Abend Zeitung' also stated, "Kane, who has twice won the Bundesliga top scorer title, has scored 13 goals in seven matches so far. Kim Min-jae's presence also shone. He started for the first time in approximately five months since the Mainz match in April, partnering with Jonathan Tah. Head coach Vincent Kompany, who had trusted the Tah-Dayot Upamecano duo this season, opted to start Kim Min-jae.

Kim Min-jae did not miss the opportunity. In 69 minutes, he recorded a 94% pass success rate (59/63), 75% long-pass success rate (6/8), two blocks, and six clearances, showcasing ironclad defense and stable build-up. His quick feet, reminiscent of his Napoli days, covered the backspace effectively, and his sharp cutting ability demonstrated high concentration.

Notably, Kim Min-jae blocked a shot with his body just before halftime, preventing a critical goal. He continued to stifle Hoffenheim's attacks in the second half.

However, the ending was disappointing. Kim Min-jae experienced muscle cramps after an aerial duel in the 22nd minute of the second half and was substituted for Upamecano. Fortunately, he walked off on his own, suggesting no serious injury. Bayern conceded one goal to Choupal after his exit but sealed the 4-1 victory with Gnabry's penalty kick.

After the match, Kim Min-jae's solid defense drew attention. He essentially put on a one-man show in defense, proving his worth despite numerous transfer rumors and criticism. German media ranked him as the second-best performer after Kane.

Germany's 'Spox' wrote, "Kim Min-jae made his second start of the season, replacing Upamecano. He attempted a desperate clearance inside the penalty box in added time during the first half. Otherwise, he showed confidence. It was a shame he had to limp off at the 70-minute mark due to injury," awarding him a rating of 2.5 points.

'Abend Zeitung' also praised Kim Min-jae. The outlet stated, "After a strong performance against Chelsea, Kim Min-jae started thanks to Kompany's rotation. He partnered with Tah and made several crucial interventions. He blocked an important header during a corner kick just before halftime," giving him a rating of 2 points.

'RAN' echoed similar sentiments. The media outlet noted, "Kim Min-jae, who replaced Upamecano, injected confidence. He repeatedly rescued Bayern, especially in the first half. Just before halftime, he made a brilliant clearance with his shoulder and temple, showcasing stability in defense. He had to leave 20 minutes before full-time due to injury," awarding him a rating of 2 points.
