TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Mike Brown is in the early stages of implementing his vision for his star players.

Through the first few days of training camp, the new Knicks coach has spoken about wanting to use Jalen Brunson more off the ball and Karl-Anthony Towns in different areas of the floor than he's been accustomed to. Individually, the All-NBA duo was outstanding last year throughout the Knicks' journey to the Eastern Conference finals. However, the Knicks' success going forward will continue to center on better maximizing these two players.

"The biggest thing is we want to move KAT around," Brown said. "We don't want to keep him in the trail spot or at the top of the floor all the time. We want to move him around to the weak corner, strong corner, weak wing and sometimes as the push man offensively."

This appears to be Brown's preference when Towns is playing power forward, which we should see a lot of this season with a healthy Mitchell Robinson. Towns shooting more frequently from the corners seems like a wise strategy but one that hasn't really been implemented much in his career. Only 10 percent of Towns' career 3-point attempts have come from the corners, and last season saw him taking just 6.9 percent of shot attempts from the corner spots, which was a career-low mark. Getting one of the greatest shooting big men of all-time shots from the easiest 3-point area on the floor seems like a good objective to try and complete.

When Towns is playing center, Brown envisions a world in which Towns is used as more of a hub for the offense. Brown, while in Sacramento, utilized Domantas Sabonis similarly. Towns might not be the passer Sabonis is, but he is a good one and has more gravity as a shooter and scorer to put pressure on a defense.

Under former Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, Towns was used as a hub for the offense at times, but it appears Brown, given his work with Sabonis, might lean into it more in an attempt to get Towns the ball in different areas of the floor as well as utilize Brunson in different ways.

"When he is at the 5, we feel he's a really good passer," Brown said of Towns. "Sometimes he'll be at the rim. Sometimes he'll be at the elbow. When he's at the elbow, that's when he's going to be in a big decision-making role, and we feel he's more than capable of making good decisions with the basketball, whether it's a (dribble hand off), pass to the cutter. We also feel when we do pass to him on the elbow and have movement and floor spacing around him that he's a huge threat. He's one dribble away from laying it up or doing what he does best, which is realize where the contact is and draw a foul."

As for Brunson, he, too, would take part in a lot of off-ball actions under Thibodeau. Those primarily took place early in games. Late in games, Brunson often willed the Knicks to victory as one of the best isolation players in basketball.

Under Brown, it does appear we could see more of Brunson running around screens without the ball to not only capitalize on his catch-and-shoot ability and not wear him down, but to give defenses another wrinkle to account for.

"He's one of the best point guards in the NBA so, of course, when he has the ball, people take notice," Towns said of Brunson at media day. "If Mike Brown said (he wants to use Brunson more off the ball), we're going to have to do a better job of getting him open, in a way like Steph Curry. We need to make it easier for him to get the ball in space and clean looks at the rim."

Last season, Brunson converted on just south of 50 percent of his spot-up jumpers, per NBA.com. A very effective mark. However, only 43.6 percent of Brunson's 3-pointers were assisted last year. For comparison, that number is lower than two other ball-dominant point guards, Tyrese Haliburton (52.8 percent) and Cade Cunningham (57 percent). A lot of factors can play into that, but it was clear from watching that Brunson was asked to self-create at a significant rate. He's that good and was able to make it work for himself and his team, but there are easier avenues to get Brunson cleaner scoring opportunities.

And Brunson is eager to test out whatever Brown might have in store.

"I'm very open to, honestly, anything right now because everything is new," Brunson said. "We just want to win. We'll find a way."

Using Towns as a hub more frequently is an easy option to get Brunson more involved off the ball. It's a tweak that could work in New York's favor in the long run while also unlocking a dynamic between the star pairing we didn't see a lot of last season.

Under Brown, the Knicks want to play faster. More than that, they want to move more. Utilizing Towns and Brunson can help the Knicks unearth another dimension offensively.
