One of the more surprising things to come out of Week 7 in the NFL is that Mike McDaniel is still the head coach of the Miami Dolphins after his team lost 31-6 to the Cleveland Browns.

It wasn't just that the Dolphins lost to the Browns, but it was the full context in the way that the game transpired. The Dolphins had a turbulent week leading up to the game, with Tua Tagovailoa coming under fire for his postgame comments after a Week 6 loss, followed by a non-apology apology. Tagovailoa criticized the way players were responding to leadership, which was at least a shot at himself, if not the culture that exists in the organization under the watch of McDaniel.

To follow that up with the lifeless performance the Dolphins put forth against a bad Browns team felt like it could be the final straw for McDaniel. Cleveland's win was the first time the Browns won a game by double-digits since late in the 2023 season, during Joe Flacco's first stint with the team.

Bad coaching gets a lot of pub during the season, especially when the leash has gotten shorter over an extended period of time and everybody is waiting for the shoe to drop. But there's been a lot of really good coaching throughout the league this year as well, and that's where we begin this week's What's Trending in the NFL.

5. Liam Coen, Jacksonville Jaguars: When the Jaguars hired Coen, it felt like building the team up to a playoff contender would be a bit of a process. Instead, the Jaguars have a few statement wins already, beating the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Jaguars have won games in scrappy fashion and are taking advantage of being in a weak division. If Coen can get Trevor Lawrence playing up to the level most expected out of him when he came out of Clemson, that would be the icing on the cake.

4. Todd Bowles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Perhaps the biggest thing Bowles deserves credit for is how he's been able to keep the offense flowing in the post-Tom Brady era with his coaching selections. After Brady retired, the Buccaneers hired Dave Canales to be the offensive coordinator in 2023. After the season, Canales got a head coaching job, so the Bucs hired Coen. After the 2024 season, Coen got the head coaching job in Jacksonville and now Josh Grizzard is running the ship. Of course, Baker Mayfield deserves a lot of credit as well. It's also a testament to Bowles that the team is unflappable in clutch time and is weathering a storm of injuries at the skill positions.

3. Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions: There were people that had their pitchforks out for Campbell after Week 1, when the Lions got dominated by the Green Bay Packers. That performance, fresh off losing both coordinators from last year to head coaching jobs, made Campbell an easy target, but it was also an overreaction. The Lions are arguably the best team in the NFL as we approach the midway mark of the season, and that's despite a defense -- specifically, the secondary -- that is ravaged by injury.

2. Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers: There is nobody who has won more through a higher level of adversity this season than Shanahan. When a team gets gutted by injuries on both sides of the ball, including the starting quarterback, the 1-5 Baltimore Ravens are a pretty good indicator of what a team ends up looking like. Instead, the 49ers have played for chunks of this season without their top three receivers, their top tight end and their starting quarterback. Losing someone like Nick Bosa would plummet many defenses -- see the Dallas Cowboys with Micah Parsons -- yet the 49ers have weathered that and limited a solid Atlanta Falcons offense in their first game without Fred Warner. Robert Saleh deserves a major hat tip as well, but this season has been a masterclass by Shanahan.

1. Shane Steichen, Indianapolis Colts: I have been as guilty as anybody to be slow in buying into what the Colts are doing this season but the sample size is too big now and the team is coming off an impressive road win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Aside from Jonathan Taylor, there isn't much on the Colts roster in the way of superstars, yet they're 6-1 and a couple of Adonai Mitchell gaffes away from potentially being undefeated. For a coach without much skin on the wall, the way he avoided sunk cost fallacy with Anthony Richardson and maximized Daniel Jones has been impressive.

Not ranked: Mike Vrabel, New England Patriots -- The way the New England Patriots looked last year under Jerod Mayo, one would think that this year's squad has undergone a complete overhaul, but that is not the case. Despite not having elite weapons around him, Drake Maye has taken a big step forward in his progression, even though the running game has struggled. This turnaround wasn't entirely unpredictable, given that we had Vrabel's tenure with the Tennessee Titans as a reference point, but it's impressive nonetheless.

5. Los Angeles Rams: The Jaguars are a solid team and the way that the Rams handled them overseas on Sunday, without Puka Nacua, was impressive. I almost wonder if this short absence for Nacua ends up being a blessing in disguise for Los Angeles because it allows Matthew Stafford to get more comfortable with Davante Adams.

4. Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles' offense badly needed the performance that they got against the Minnesota Vikings, getting both of their star receivers involved. We're about to find out a whole lot about them in the next month, as they take on the New York Giants, who beat them 34-17 just two weeks ago, followed by the Packers, Lions, Cowboys, Chicago Bears and Chargers.

3. Buffalo Bills: If there is one team that should be at the front of the line as a buyer at the trade deadline, it's the Bills. They looked like a wagon early in the season, but as soon as James Cook got faded from the game plan -- somewhat because of the defense's approach and somewhat because of curious decisions by the coaches -- the team started to struggle. Josh Allen is fantastic but they are operating with no margin for error with their offensive playmakers.

2. Kansas City Chiefs: A Chiefs team without Rashee Rice felt like the universe's way of leveling off the playing field for the rest of the NFL. Giving Patrick Mahomes Rice, along with Xavier Worthy returning from injury, feels a bit unfair.

1. Detroit Lions: If you want to understand how good the Lions are, the game against the Buccaneers was a good one to look at. They've missed Alim McNeill all season before Sunday, and he introduced himself as an absolute problem for opposing offenses. Now factor in that Detroit had its entire B-team playing in the secondary. When the Lions get some reinforcements on the back end on defense, they might have the best top-to-bottom rosters in the NFL.

Not ranked: Indianapolis Colts -- I know I've been tough on the Colts this season but allow me to explain. If I were putting together a power ranking, the Colts would absolutely be in my top-five, perhaps even in my top-three. Where they've missed the mark in this section this season is I've had a hard time picturing the Colts being able to get through the AFC powerhouses -- namely Kansas City and Buffalo -- to get to the Super Bowl. However, their dominating win over the Chargers certainly was a statement and their biggest chance at a statement will come next month in Kansas City. They're becoming awfully hard to ignore in the Super Bowl conversation, which I could have never imagined saying this year before the season.

5. Arizona Cardinals: I would say there's no way the Cardinals can lose this week since they're on a bye, but I said the same thing late in their game against the Titans so I won't declare that.

4. New Orleans Saints: There are some huge games remaining on the schedule for the Saints this season. They still have head-to-head matchups against the Dolphins, New York Jets and Titans, all of which could impact draft slots. That, along with whether they're able to flip Alvin Kamara for something at the trade deadline, are the main things to watch for.

3. Miami Dolphins: You can't even hate the Dolphins (unless you're a Dolphins fan) because at least they're mixing in being a must-watch soap opera amidst being a football disaster.

2. Tennessee Titans: There's an argument to be made that the Denver Broncos have the best defense in the NFL. However, I would argue that whatever defense is playing against the Titans truly has the best defense in the NFL.

1. New York Jets: The most interesting thing going for the Jets right now is how Aaron Glenn will react to questions about Justin Fields. A couple of weeks ago, it was an absurd thing to even question if Fields' job was in danger, even after he led the offense to negative 10 passing yards, yet Fields was benched the following game. This week, the owner took a blowtorch to Fields, yet Glenn wanted to pick at semantics and pretend things are just fine. Which, to be fair, they are fine, if the goal is the No. 1 pick.

Not ranked: Houston Texans -- This has to be where McDaniel ends up as the offensive coordinator, right? McDaniel and DeMeco Ryans both arrived together in San Francisco in 2017 as assistants and were on the same staff there for five years. I'm not sure what their relationship is like but I do know that this Texans offense has the potential to cost Ryans his job down the road, if he doesn't find the right person to fix it.
