Bruno Fernandes was ruled as onside for his Manchester United opener against Chelsea - but fans didn't agree with the ruling, even after the Premier League released imaged

The Premier League have released the VAR images of Bruno Fernandes' opening goal against Chelsea.

Ruben Amorim's side looked like a side reborn in the opening exchanges as they peppered Robert Sanchez's goal. And it was the shot-stopper who cracked first when he rushed off his line and clattered Bryan Mbeumo, who was bearing down on the Chelsea goal.

Sanchez was handed his marching orders and United, now one man up, could smell blood. It was Fernandes to break the deadlock, when he latched onto a pass from Patrick Dorgu to stab the ball home past Filip Jorgensen.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Shay Given admitted he thought the goal was offside: "The angle I've seen, he looked offside if I'm being honest..."

Benjamin Sesko was in an offside position, but Fernandes looked to have been played on Chalobah, who had stepped up late.

And even after the Premier League released images of the decision, some fans disagreed: "This is clearly offside...The precedent was set a long time ago!"

"Wow, the rule is clearly the sleeve!!! incompetent PGMOL refs at it again," a second fumed. While a third said: "Never in my life seen a line that high on the shoulder?"

And another added: "Are you not offside from the sleeve?"

It would go from bad to worse for Chelsea as Enzo Maresca scrambled with his substitutes, hooking Cole Palmer. Casemiro would net United's second, but he quickly went from hero to zero.

The Brazilian was given his marching orders when he picked up a second yellow card on the stroke of half-time.

Sky Sports' Alan Smith said: "The first yellow card was such a silly one, and when you're on a yellow...

"He gets the ball but it's pulling back Andrey Santos that earns him the second yellow. Talk about making life difficult for yourselves. Totally on top, Manchester United, and then that happens."
