Thomas Tuchel was the first man in 25 years to guide PSG into the semi-finals of the Champions League when he did so in 2020 - but could barely celebrate their late winner as he sat on the touchline with a moon boot on.

The German, during his tenure in Paris, was hugely successful domestically and also became the first manager to take them to the final of the Champions League, losing to Bayern Munich in Lisbon. But days earlier at the Estadio da Luz, Tuchel saw his side avoid embarrassment against Atalanta.

The Italians were on the cusp of a shock as they led heading into the 89th minute, owing to Mario Pasalic's early strike. Tuchel continued to bark orders as he sat on a drinks box, which he needed crutches to get to.

PSG had confirmed that Tuchel suffered a "sprained ankle and fractured his fifth metatarsal" before the last eight tie in Portugal. The injury occurred following a workout session that Tuchel took part in. It meant that the two late goals, which turned the game on its head, had the PSG staff and subs up on their feet running down the touchline, but their head coach was left sitting down as he celebrated Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's winner.

The ex-Stoke man came off the bench to become the unlikely saviour for a side boasting the likes Kylian Mbappe and Neymar Jnr. Marquinhos had bundled home an equaliser, looking to force extra-time, only for Choupo-Moting to score 149 seconds later.

Tuchel told RMC Sport: "Imagine what I could have done with two legs! It is our 50th birthday today and we will not forget this day. We are really happy to be in the semi-finals. It is a historic season, with four titles and a Champions League semi-final."

Avoiding such embarrassment on the European stage likely kept Tuchel in a job with the PSG hierarchy judging their seasons by their Champions League performance. They've since been able to scale to the top of the mountain, winning the European Cup last year.

The two sides will meet on Wednesday for the first time since that historic night in Lisbon with PSG no longer having to play with the monkey on their back, instead donning their tag as European champions.

Atalanta have claimed the Europa League since that night, owing to Ademola Lookman's quality, but he is looking for a way out of the club and has again been left out. Despite his absence, their manager, the ex-Southampton boss Ivan Juric, is adamant they have to take it to the Parisians.

He said: "You have to be brave [against Paris]; they have great ball-playing skills and attacking speed. But you have to be brave: teams that drop back too much struggle more. So you have to face them head-on."
