BALTIMORE -- The New York Yankees' clubhouse was as quiet as the water a half-mile away in the Inner Harbor. They knew that by losing 4-2 to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, they had squandered a key chance to gain ground in the American League East on the first-place Toronto Blue Jays, who had been destroyed by the Kansas City Royals.

"It's kind of upsetting not to get the 'W' tonight to get closer to the Blue Jays to win the (division)," said second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., whose two-run shot made him a member of the 30-30 club but who also made a key sixth-inning error that led to a run.

The Yankees remained in second place, 3 1/2 games back of Toronto, which was hammered 20-1 by Kansas City. The Yankees had a 9.8 percent chance to win the division going into Friday, according to FanGraphs. After the loss, that figure dropped to just 5 percent with eight games remaining in the regular season.

The Yankees were still in control of the top wild-card spot.

"Every time you lose, it sucks," manager Aaron Boone said. "Every time you win, it feels good. We're working to shake hands and put ourselves in the best possible position heading down the stretch here. It's a tough one tonight, obviously."

The lowlights came in the sixth when starting pitcher Will Warren let Jordan Westburg's broken-bat comebacker bounce off his glove and through his legs to start the inning. Then Chisholm tried to shovel pass Gunnar Henderson's ground ball back to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, only to flip it well high and away from Goldschmidt, putting runners on second and third. Ryan Mountcastle's subsequent sacrifice fly to right field brought in Westburg to give the O's a 2-0 lead.

"That was probably the worst play I've ever made in my life," Warren said. "A bit embarrassing and it led to a run. So that was disappointing."

He said he looked up to locate the bat shard that tumbled toward him.

"The ball had spin on it, but at the end of the day, I've caught ground balls 1,000 times before. Got to make that play," Warren said. "I definitely was a little hard on myself, especially not making that play. Basically gifted them a run. Jazz gets the two-run bomb and it's like, ah, it would have been a tied game if I make that play. It's never good when we lose. Especially at the point of the season we're at now."

Chisholm was upset, too.

"I thought I was a little bit further in front of (Goldschmidt) when I was about to flip it," he said. "Just a misplay by me. Could have been better. Could have at least gotten it to Paulie, even if he would have been safe. Just trying to get that out. It happens."

Warren lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up an earned run on two walks, four strikeouts and four hits, including a second-inning leadoff homer to Mountcastle on a pitch over the middle. He was outdueled by Trevor Rogers (9-2), who continued his excellent season with six scoreless innings, seven strikeouts, two walks and a hit to Aaron Judge.

Baltimore added another run in the sixth when Samuel Basallo grounded out to second base with the bases loaded and one out, plating Henderson to put the Yankees behind 3-0.

Most of the Yankees players dressed and headed for the team buses quickly after the game, knowing they were just that much less likely to repeat as AL East champions.

"That's all we're thinking of right now, is winning the division," Chisholm said. "This is a tough loss today."
