It wasn't as complicated as, say, building a passenger jet.

But the official opening of mobile's third Airbus assembly line did have its dramatic moment...

"We've got a very, very expensive curtain there," a company official told the crowd gather to watch the big reveal. " And if this is gonna work, it's all gonna drop down, and we're gonna see the line opening."

...a dramatic moment that was, of course, delivered without a hitch.

The curtain did drop, revealing the line's first fuselage, the crowd applauding appropriately.

And the moment deserved the fanfare.

After more than a decade building passenger jets at Mobile's Brookley Aeroplex, Airbus was more than ready to open its third assembly line here, the second to be dedicated to the company's biggest hit so far...

"The A320 is, you're right, now is the most popular and best-selling commercial aircraft ever, has just reached that status a couple of weeks ago," said Christian Scherer, Airbus' CEO of Commerical Aircraft.

And that is exactly why this new final assembly line was built here in Mobile.

When operating at full capacity, this new line should be capable of turning out seven or eight A320's per month in addition to what's already being produced at Brookley.

"We'll be up to 20 airplanes," said Scherer. "And you can do the math yourself. Over 11 and a half, twelve months, that's a lot of airplanes and a big portion of what Airbus produces."

That's also a lot of good paying local jobs.

"We've added over a thousand jobs already, just with this line already," said Daryl Taylor, Airbus' Senior Vice President for Commerical Aircraft Operations. "And that, as Christian just said is just the direct jobs. We've added several hundred indirect jobs with suppliers... and, obviously the amount of jobs we added in the construction phase. And we still have three to four hundred additional jobs to meet the full capacity on this line."

That means, when the new A320 line reaches full capacity, along with its engineering office, Airbus will be directly employing more than three thousand workers in Mobile.

And even as they heaped praise on Airbus for its faith in Mobile, politicians who shared the stage with company officials were quick to lay much of the success story at the feet of those who put these planes together.

"Airbus has invested in the people of Mobile," U.S. Senator Katie Britt told the assembled crowd. "Looking at the programs you have here at the high school level, showing people what's possible and allowing them to envision themselves as being part of your team. Thank you. It has made a huge difference."

"Today, it's not about us in suits," proclaimed Congressman Shomari Figures of Mobile. "It's about the people who wear the polos and t-shirts to work. It's about people who aren't afraid to get dirty at work. It is about you. There is no Airbus without you."

it was praised echoed by Christian Scherer of Airbus.

"We have huge confidence in the workforce here. It's been nothing but a positive experience in the 10 years we've been here. Three lines in ten years. If I'm not mistaken, that's a record."

Airbus executives told NBC 15 News that Mobile is on track to becoming the 4th largest commercial aircraft producer in the world and acknowledged they are looking at other expansion opportunities at their Mobile site, saying,"The sky is NOT the limit."
