An investigation into a derelict hotel fire in Cornwall is ongoing amid concerns over the structural stability of the empty derelict building. The fire, which broke out at a former hotel on Narrowcliff Road, Newquay, was reported to the fire service at around 3.20am yesterday (Sunday, October 12) and took all night to bring under control.

The fire, within the Narrowcliff Hotel, spread to multiple floors of the building. There are now fears that the latest blaze has rendered the structure more dangerous and at risk of further deterioration.

It's not the first time the building has been hit by fire. In July, there was a blaze at the Narrowcliff Hotel and adjoining buildings after which the body of a man in his 30s was found. A 33-year-old man from Bolton was arrested on suspicion of murder but subsequently released on police bail.

On Sunday, appliances were sent from Newquay, Perranporth, St Dennis, Tolvaddon and Mevagissey, alongside a water carrier from Helton and two aerial ladder platforms from Newquay and Truro.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue said that firefighters worked throughout the night to bring the fire under control, eventually extinguishing the blaze at around 2pm yesterday.

The fire log said that an investigation would commence to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire. The investigation began this morning (Monday, October 13).

The investigation involved both the fire service and Devon and Cornwall Police. However, due to concerns regarding the stability of the building and the extent of the damage caused to the former hotel, the investigation has been limited so far.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: "Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a fire at a derelict hotel on Narrowcliff Road at approximately 03:20 hours on October 12.

"On arrival, crews were met with a well-developed fire affecting multiple floors of the building.

"Due to the severity of the fire and the structural condition of the premises, a defensive firefighting strategy was adopted. At the height of the incident, five fire engines and a number of specialist resources were in attendance, including an aerial ladder platform.

"Firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control. The incident was scaled down in the early hours, with crews remaining on scene to damp down and monitor for hot spots. The fire was confirmed to be fully extinguished at around 14:00 hours.

"A joint investigation between Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and Devon and Cornwall Police commenced on the morning of October 13 to establish the cause of the fire. Due to the extent of the damage and concerns regarding structural stability, investigative activity has been limited but remains ongoing.

"Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service would like to thank local residents for their patience and cooperation during the incident and subsequent investigation."
