A woman who had planned to spend the night at a hotel in Ireland has expressed her outrage after arriving for her reservation only to find it had closed down.

Nicola Dunseith had booked and paid for a night at the Portstewart hotel, Me and Mrs Jones, with her husband to celebrate her birthday. She was shocked to arrive there on Saturday, October 11, to see a sign on the door stating it was closed for refurbishment.

Speaking to BelfastLive, she disclosed that they had received no prior warning from the hotel about its closure during their stay. She also mentioned that she had been unable to contact anyone from the establishment to discuss what had happened.

She noted that she had been told that the notices were put up at the hotel on Friday and other customers had arrived unaware of this, having to scramble to find alternative accommodation at the last minute.

A notice on the hotel's door announces it is "entering into a refurbishment project for upgrades", according to Belfast Live, reports the Irish Mirror.

Nicola commented: "We were looking forward to having a nice night away and couldn't believe it when we arrived at the hotel and saw that it was closed. We have not heard a thing about this and have not been able to speak to anyone at the hotel to find out what is going on.

"It is disgusting the way that we have been treated and we have been told that there have been lots of other people turning up to the hotel only to find out that it is closed. Thankfully we managed to find somewhere else to stay the night and will try and get our room refunded through Booking.com but it is horrible that it is treating customers like this."

The Me and Mrs Jones hotel has been asked for a response, but they haven't replied at the time of publication.
