TOKYO - Typhoon Nakri passed through the Izu island chain south of Tokyo on Monday as it moved eastward away from the Japanese archipelago, after part of the chain was lashed by another typhoon last week.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of strong winds and high waves, as well as possible landslides where the ground has been loosened by the recent heavy rainfall.

Osaka expo wraps up 6-month run after drawing over 25 million visitors

OSAKA - The World Exposition in Osaka came to a close Monday after a six-month run that drew more than 25 million visitors through exhibitions showcasing advanced technologies and diverse cultures, with organizers calling the event a success despite some operational challenges.

At the closing ceremony for the event held under the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives," a declaration for the expo stated that it had "reaffirmed the pertinence of the expo as a global public good that brings about mutual understanding and dialogue and serve as a catalyst for change."

ANA plane returns to Haneda airport after possibly hitting runway lights

TOKYO - An All Nippon Airways plane turned back to Tokyo's Haneda airport about an hour after takeoff Monday evening, with transport authorities saying the aircraft could have hit runway lights.

With the lights found damaged, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism suspected that the Boeing 737 plane's wheels impacted them when taking off.

Sumo: Onosato, Hoshoryu want London show to put their sport on global stage

LONDON - Yokozuna Onosato and Hoshoryu vowed Monday to throw their weight behind the promotion of their sport at the upcoming Grand Sumo Tournament in London, the first visit to the British capital by the Japan Sumo Association in 34 years.

The two grand champions were both occupying the second-highest rank of ozeki when the JSA's first overseas exhibition tour in 20 years was announced in December. Since then, they have become the faces of the ancient sport by reaching the top echelon.

BEIJING - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday pledged $10 million to a U.N. organization over the next five years to narrow global gender gaps at a summit commemorating 30 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration for advancing women's rights.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the two-day Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, which drew participants from some 110 countries and international organizations, Xi noted "deep-rooted problems such as violence and discrimination still persist," adding "equality between men and women remains a lofty yet arduous task."

Rising summer heat spurs more Tokyo men to use parasols: survey

TOKYO - Nearly half of men surveyed online in Tokyo used parasols amid high summer temperatures in 2025, including many who did so for the first time this year -- a sign rising heat is eroding the strong association of the sunshades with women.

Parasols have long been popular among women to protect their skin from the sun's ultraviolet rays. However, the Tokyo metropolitan government survey showed an overwhelming majority of male users saying they decided to use them to keep cool this summer.
