Virgin Australia passengers will soon be able to carry more weight in carry-on luggage, but with the number of items reduced.

Economy passengers are currently permitted to bring two items weighing up to 7kg combined, plus a small personal item.

But, from February 2, that limit will be increased to 8kg, but only for a single item.

Passengers will still be permitted to carry a single personal item, such as a handbag or laptop.

Virgin Australia Chief Operations Officer Chris Snook said the changes were based on team member and guest feedback.

"(The changes) will help deliver an enhanced on-board experience, while keeping the boarding process simple and consistent," he said.

"The result will be a smoother start to the journey and a more comfortable experience on board.

"We want your bag, where you sit."

Business Class, Economy X and other loyalty program members will be able to carry two bags up to 14kg, plus one small item.

The same size limits will continue to apply.

Wight limits of 7kg have generally been the standard across Australia's airlines.

Qantas allows one 7kg bag on its international economy flights, or one piece totally 10kg or two pieces totally 14kg on domestic flights.

Virgin also announced on Tuesday that Velocity Frequent Flyer members would be able to redeem their points to book small cats and dogs on new pet-friendly flights.

The carrier announced last month that it would be operating Australia's first-ever flights with pets on board on services.

The flights will be between Melbourne and the Gold Coast and Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast, and will commence October 16.
